Nope, it’s surrounded by shallow sawgrass and cypress head wetlands. I’m very familiar with the area, spent years walking through it doing photography and coming to that exact detention center area at night with friends for amateur astronomy nights. A detainee could walk out of there in almost any direction, and there is a busy highway just a mile to the south.
It wouldn’t be an easy walk, especially if trying to move quickly, but a boat wouldn’t be needed. And despite the hyperbole, it’s not infested with alligators. Maybe a few water moccasins and pythons, but they’re not really dangerous unless you step on one.

Alligator Alcatraz sounds like a Loony Toons cartoon. The hard-right are always masters of semantics for trivializing cruelty and lawless outrages. They are talking about a concentration camp of tents and cages in a Florida swamp. Dehumanizing, denaturalizing and disappearing the targeted individuals. Heather Cox Richardson did a good piece on this facility and a concise history of the manufactured immigration crisis, particularly relevant to large-scale western, industrial farming.
