Dems (and most Americans) fail to grasp that they are dealing with a hardened band of criminals masquerading as a legitimate administration. Lewandowski and his fellow thugs are nothing more than mafioso agents who are working for (no pun intended) a Don. They follow the same rules of solidarity and stonewalling as any gang member who ever worked for Capone, Gambino, Gotti or a host of other merciless organized crime bosses. Lewandowski is proving he’s a “made man” and worthy of membership in the Trump Crime Syndicate. Dems need to wake up to the fact that these are very, very bad people with very, very dangerous agendas. There is no honor among Trump’s capos; there is no respect for the law or for society in general. We’re watching the brazen criminality of the Trump Organization and it starts at the top.

No George, the Whitehouse is turning the constitution into a joke and if the House Democrats resort to extraconstitutional means to get compliance, then the constitution is indeed meaningless. They could try to use inherent contempt, but who would enforce it? As much as I’d like the thugs to be taken out and jailed, this fiasco is all on Trump and the GOP. You may wish the Democrats would go all Stalin on the Trumpists. It might even give us the frisson of vicarious naughtiness if they did, but it would negate the whole purpose of the excercise which is to preserve the constitution.

If the Republicans thought the Democrats would ever pull any of this shit - ANY - of this withholding, flouting, etc., they wouldn’t do it so blithely. It’s beyond cynical. But they know the Democrats would/will never do it. Never. That’s why they went apeshit when someone hinted (I think it was Sheldon Whitehouse) at possibly adding more justices.

Can someone on the thread explain to me how it is that acting in contempt of Congress has no enforcement mechanism? Can anyone go before a House committee and just stonewall to their heart’s content without actual repercussions?

Given that this was completely predictable, one hopes that the Democrats had a reason for holding the hearing, and didn’t simply want an open display of masochism. Perhaps they are laying the groundwork for a more significant action, by giving Hope Hicks and Lewandowski the opportunity to display an insolent lack of cooperation.
But if there is a plan, what harm would there be in announcing it? This obscure and arcane process leading to what might or might not be impeachment isn’t very impressive, and appearances do matter in our world. What prevents a statement about the purpose of these hearings and whatever realistic hope there is that what happened today will lead somewhere useful?

I’m really fucking sick of the Dems being so weak. The resmuglicans don’t play by the rules. We know this by now. Why do we expect them to, why do we always act surprised when they don’t, and why don’t we hold them accountable for not? So disheartening. Our government is withering on the vine and our leaders are letting it. Wringing their damn hands, “Oh, what can we do? What ever can we do?” Pathetic.
