Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) was taken to the hospital for an overnight stay on Thursday after feeling unwell, the senator’s office announced on Thursday night.
I just realized that if Leahy (or any other Dem senator) were to die, that would flip the Senate. Not sure whether that would make much difference this close to the election, though.
Nothing like having the entire Democratic agenda resting on the health of a few octogenarians with huge egos and no desire to spend time with their grandchildren.
That’s true, but only because the governor of Vermont is a Republican and would surely appoint another Republican unless there’s a law preventing him from doing so. Otherwise, if something happened to, say, DiFi, Newsom would replace her with a Democrat who’d hold the seat until there was an election to replace her.
When Bernie Sanders was going through somethin similar to Sen Leahy health ‘issues’, Vermont Gov Scott said that he would fill Sanders’ seat with an independent who would caucus with the Democrats, as Sanders does.
“I don’t have to, but I want to make sure we do things in the traditional way, and that’s to appoint someone from the same party, and also, you know, has the same type of approach as well,” Scott said at a news conference Oct. 23.
It would take just a day for the goober GOP senators to fuck things up if they get the chance. My hope is that Senator Leahy will be OK. I have my mail-in ballot in front of me (got it in the mail yesterday) and I have my various choices already listed so I can fill in the slots for propositions, judges and candidates. Once the ballot is filled in I am gonna take it myself to my County Recorder’s office and hand it to a human. I don’t trust the Post Office for this. Even though the recorder’s office is less than 3 miles from my house, the mail still goes from here in Tucson all the way (120 miles) to Phoenix to get sorted and then driven back here which makes no sense to me at all.
Edit to add: Nobody my age should be running for any elective office. The job of us old farts should be to throw verbal bombs from the sidelines about yelling at clouds and such.

Apparently idiot “protesters” have thrown tomato soup at a Van Gogh painting of sunflowers at a London Museum. Then they glued themselves to the wall below the painting. I would hope the painting can be restored but leave the two idiots glued to the walls. Let em starve. Be sure to cover important art paintings with glass!
You’re trusting that a Republican Governor would go against his party by not throwing control of the US Senate to the Republicans during a crucial time? I think you will be unhappily surprised should Leahy pass away between now and the start of the next Congress.
The painting is glazed so it wasn’t harmed. And I agree, leave them glued to the wall for a couple days. Meanwhile, take down the painting, clean it up, hang it back right there, then have them unglued and arrested.
Hey, I’m as concerned about climate change as the next guy, but these morons are the same ones who consistently object to any real solutions and figure that their fantasy world of windmills and solar panels can power modern civilization, using unicorn farts as “backup” when wind and solar aren’t producing. One could object that they’re just kids and don’t really understand. The sad thing is that many, many of their elders—including policymakers—are just as appallingly naive about energy realities (Bernie, I’m lookin’ at you, Ed Markey, AOC, and plenty more). And yes, I’m a Democrat.
I wouldn’t bank on that. I don’t care what he says, it’s my experience that Republican governors in blue states can be perfectly reasonable right up until the point it benefits them to be unreasonable.
