Bankruptcy is supposed to allow you to shed debts you cannot pay, with the creditors getting a piece of whatever non-exempt assets you do have. But there’s not much point to it if the bulk of the debt isn’t dischargeable. He still might have to do it, however, depending on what other creditors he has.
