In Eisenhower’s day, we had the undemocratic dixiecrats. Today , as Joe Walsh said yesterday, he hopes there is room for both him and Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic party. The unifying factor must be that we are all small “d” democrats. Restore democracy first, worry about competing economic policy later.

Sports is corrupt. Full stop. Period. End of sentence. Allowing essentially unrestricted sports betting has killed it. Apparently you can place ‘proposition bets’ (e.g., shortstop for Team X [Player Y] will commit an error in the top of the sixth) as well as wagers on the outcome of the game. If you ask, “Well, what’s wrong with that?”, please consider that booting a ground ball or making a wild throw to first are both very much under the players’ control. Same with wild pitches, passed balls (catcher), and strike-outs. And there are players in minor league baseball under investigation for just those sorts of shenanigans.

Trump still doesn’t seem to have figured it out yet. May be the last person on earth who fails to understand the Ukraine war dynamics. So, disappointed with Putin, Biden’s war, $350 billion in US spending, 100% tariffs on a country that hardly has any direct trade with the US. This absurd tariff obsession is really beginning to hurt the US because of the general uncertainty it creates. Nobody is going to invest on the assumption that Trump will not change his mind tomorrow. Putin is in deep trouble at the moment. The Russian economy is already in recession, and by converting the Russian economy to a wartime economy, Putin has locked in negative or very low economic growth over the next decade. And he’s got over a million Russians and ethnic minorities of Russia killed or wounded. Trump’s advisers may be warning him that forcing the removal of Putin at this point could allow a real hardliner in, which would blow all kinds of scams Trump had planned such as his Crimea resort hotels.

Does the White House have no one to advise Trump on protocol at any events he attends and/or participates in? (The Chief of Protocol works out of the State Dept., and her office might have been consulted but need not have been for an event like this, if the WH had someone to handle it.) Trump appears to have had no idea that he was supposed to recede from view of the camera taking the official picture of the team’s trophy-raising. Of course Trump would expect to be the center of attention if given half a chance, but this story seems to me as much about a chaotic WH as about Trump’s narcissim.

It strains credulity that absolutely everything needs to be withheld.
ETA: Musk has moved many of his businesses to Texas, and no doubt has loads of correspondence about his legitimate business interests and interactions with the government of Texas. Even if some of them are of a confidential or personal nature to someone, the business stuff is ‘of legitimate public interest’.

Yes, but the vast majority of immigrants just want to work, raise families, and do all the other things that normal people do.
MAGA people elected Trump for retribution, and they enjoy seeing suffer anybody who doesn’t look like or think as they do. We, the normal people, didn’t start this, just as “we” didn’t start world war II or invade Ukraine. Fascists did. The New York Times in 2017 immediately began telling us we had to give a big hug to the Trump supporters. What did it get us? January 6, Charlottesville, and the destruction of democracy.
I’ve yet to see a legitimate historian say we should stop “othering” the Waffen SS. Pat Buchanan did at Bittburg, but that’s a rather low bar.

Remember also that the complete coward Merrick the Meek was in charge - so unless there is 4k video evidence, no one was getting charged for anything, especially if they were GQP - and even if there was, and they were called TSF, he still wouldn’t have authoried prosecution.
