Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Sunday made clear that he is not amused by Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s dig at him for going on paternity leave after the birth of his adopted twins.
As a mother I find it amusing that this is now an issue because a man is now doing it, but women have been dealing with child care and work for hundreds of years and nobody gave a sh*t.
When parents are allowed to care for their newborn children a bonding forms that leads to strong family values that Tucks wouldn’t know doodley squat about.
Remember when people used to get here at the top and post FRIST! (after our previous GOP Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist who was a GREAT doctor and so GOOD he was able to diagnose Terry Schiavo as ‘not’ brain dead). Good times.
Though I’m no fan of Sarah Palin, I remember all those questions she got about how she’d tend to both her responsibilities as a mother and as VP, should McCain win the election, and I kept saying, Why isn’t Obama being asked exactly the same question about his responsibilities as a father and as president?
(Of course I know the answer to that.)
Anyway, maybe some good will come of Buttigieg’s being public and open about paternity leave–it can broaden the conversation/debate to include fathers as well as mothers.
I wonder what Fox News policy is on FMLA is? Oh they’re private so are they claiming that they don’t have more than 50 employees…but Pete works for a public agency.
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides certain employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year. It also requires that their group health benefits be maintained during the leave.
FMLA is designed to help employees balance their work and family responsibilities by allowing them to take reasonable unpaid leave for certain family and medical reasons. It also seeks to accommodate the legitimate interests of employers and promote equal employment opportunity for men and women.
FMLA applies to all public agencies, all public and private elementary and secondary schools, and companies with 50 or more employees. These employers must provide an eligible employee with up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave each year for any of the following reasons:
For the birth and care of the newborn child of an employee;
For placement with the employee of a child for adoption or foster care;
To care for an immediate family member (i.e., spouse, child, or parent) with a serious health condition; or
To take medical leave when the employee is unable to work because of a serious health condition.
GOP insists on taking the losing side of every issue.
I was at the mall yesterday and while I was loading things in my car a lady pulled into a spot a few spaces over and had Laura Ingraham’s radio show blaring from her speakers. She stayed in the car for a minute to do some stuff on her phone and left the radio running. She was trying to make a big deal of Buttigieg taking paternity leave. I don’t see how that’s a winning issue.
