The fight for gay marriage obscured the importance of workplace rights which affect a much larger swath of the population. Gat marriage really took off when most of the major gay orgs were headed by lesbians, for whom this was a bigger issue than for gay men. It also was an easier issue for HRC which had a very corporatist approach to human rights, as it required less confrontation and more of a building on existing policy and legislation.
