‘It Is A Gut Punch’: Milwaukee Misses Out On Dem Convention Bump | Talking Points Memo

Let me tell you, the pandemic is a “gut punch” everywhere in the US, thanks largely to Trump’s gross mismanagement of it.

The article struck me for the complete lack of any serious reference to the FSCKING PANDEMIC that is the reason for the convention not being held in person. And in particular for the fact that the trump regime’s unwillingness to take the pandemic seriously has made it impossible to hold conventions or any other mass events in person. If we were any of the countries that have done so much better at controlling infections, even something the size of a convention would have been possible (and even still profitable for the local hospitality industry.)

Oh, and @HBryan: can you think of any more efficient way of getting groups cross-infected than a day mixing with others bookended by 3 hours of breathing one another’s air…

In horse racing, I think there’s a term for betting on every horse in one race. I’d want one of those tickets for this pool.

Speaking as someone who lives in a coastal tourist town, I’m pretty sure our numbers are up, especially on the weekdays. Nobody is flying, so folks hop in their cars for a day at the beach figuring they can skip the weekend crowds. Now we have weekend crowds everyday of the week, most of them not wearing masks, because they’re on vacation and besides beach air prevents COVID…

…and because most are day-trippers, they’re not spending any money, just leaving germs.

It’s also in doubt whether there are electoral benefits in the host state to holding the convention there. Still, it’s no worse than a wash. The DNC should right now grant the 2024 convention to Milwaukee just in case it shores up Democrats’ odds in Wisconsin.

That was all pre-pandemic planning - I attended the county convention training back in Dec (Which didn’t actually cover how to run a country (or congressional district) convention. It was a 4 hour block on how the national convention was going to work, and how to be a delegate at the national level.

No useful information.

Our Congressional District Convention (TN doesn’t do a state level convention - that would require TN organizing at the state level, and we can’t have that.) was conducted virtually. No state issues, no party issues, just who was going to be a national delegate.
