In Whiplash-Inducing Reversal, Abbott Requires Masks In COVID-Ravaged Texas | Talking Points Memo

In a major reversal, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) issued a statewide rule Thursday requiring masks to be worn in public, but only after the dramatic COVID-19 spike in the state.

Abbott’s political obituary was already being written as the actual obituary of Texans were being written. But I’m sure we can expect the every crazier Devil Patrick to come out and say again that “grannie’s gotta die for the dow.”

And p.s. this is the actual reason why he switched. From the IHME model:

run this to election day in November, and Texas was looking at 12K or so deaths. You can bet that John Cornyn and Texas republicans were deluging him with angry phone calls.

Reality is just relentless, isn’t it

Too little, too late.

Abbott’s only saving grace is that he’s not as invested in the culture of death as his Lieutenant Governor.

Trump tweetstorm in which he makes fun of Abbott’s wheelchair in 5, 4, 3…

A Republican who backs away from a big mistake. That wasn’t the usual course of action.

Gotta love how the party that has spent the last 10 years denying science and pretending that what they saw on FOX was reality, is now being hit upside the head by reality. Sorry to see so many people die to get here, and so many people loose their jobs. Only the fact that non-republicans are being hurt too is keeping my schadenfreude in check.

What will the KAG (Kill American Geriatrics) Tx Lt. Gov who says he will not listen to Dr. Fauci anymore - say about this?

And

What will the KAG (Kiss Assing GRU) Trump say about this?

Observe the spike after Abbott went ahead to Phase 3 Ropening too soon!

Addendum:

Meanwhile…
DeSantis is showing us he is just “more loyal” and truly a Mini-Trump by not issuing a statewide order to wear mask…10,000 new cases today in Florida, way more than Texas!

DeSantis idol’s hotel…

Just a reminder:

Trumpism is Lethal…Deadly…Evil!

My goodness, if you’re not on top of things I don’t know who is.
Good luck with the enforcement now that you’ve gone forwards, backwards and around the barn a few times. People will be confused and non-compliant.

Pennsylvania’s Tom Wolf just issued a similar order—masks everywhere, basically. We mostly let people into businesses again and loosened up in some other ways and whoops, we saw a steady rise in cases since. Not out of control like TX, FL and AZ but a definite upward trend.

This is going to make some heads explode.
I’ve got some candidates I’d like to see it happen with.

I’ve been skeptical that Republicans would relent as the virus got worse in their states, sticking to their guns and riding it out, and not giving up on their political belief until either the cost became too great or they just couldn’t take denying reality anymore. Maybe I was a bit too negative…this is a big reversal by Abbott, one that will piss off a lot of conservatives in arguably the most “we’re independent!” state in the nation. If he’s giving in this early (even if it’s just masks and not a total shutdown), then maybe others will start giving ground as well, at least on the big things like masks. They probably are hoping that masks and distancing will be enough to slow the growth…it probably won’t be enough, but it will help, if people do it and it’s enforced.

It’s too bad they are coming this late though, a lot of pain that wasn’t necessary is about to happen. We’ll see if that pushes them to pull back anymore going forward.

Abbott can make fun of Trump’s in, oh, six months to a year.

And NOT A FUCKING WORD about any of this from the Moron. NOT A FUCKING WORD about lives lost. NOT A FUCKING WORD. He’s worried about his niece’s book publication. It’s simply too much for me. Why aren’t his ratings in the single digits?

Could someone please Superglue shut the piehole of the Lt. Governor?

His utterances make Abbott sound like Gandhi…

Bbbbbut, Dan Patrick said it was necessary to let Grandma die in order to save the economy, so they had to reopen ASAP.

Now Grandma and the economy are both dead. Stupid, greedy man.

The Five Stages of Abbott Grief:

  1. “We’re not New York!”
  2. “Well, our problem’s not as bad as New York’s yet!”
  3. “I blame New York for our really, really, really bad problem!”
  4. “New York, help us!”
  5. “Screw this – I’m goin’ to New York!”

Gotta give him credit for doing the right thing too late.
But hope they vote the bastard Grim Reaper out.

Seriously, they have to make this a law if they want men to wear masks. If they didn’t have a law about pants, lots of guys wouldn’t bother with them either.
