During a visit two migrant detention centers in Texas on Friday, Vice President Mike Pence acknowledged how “tough” conditions were in one of the facilities and even offered that “no,” conditions were not acceptable.
If you watched the footage of him inside the kennel, those 90 seconds were actually the sum total of his visit with concentration “campers” at the over-crowded and foul-smelling McAllen CPB “facility.”
susPence later said that all of the people he spoke with — men, women and children — all said they were being treated well.
Uh huh.
If he wants to be the poster boy for everything wrong with the Dominionist Evangelists Club, he’s definitely in the running. It’s going to be a tough slog though. With so many shameless, bald-faced liars to choose from we may have to declare a 19- or 190-way tie.
Fun Fact: The McAllen CPB office features a framed photo of Tomi Lehren.
When talking to reporters shortly after visiting the caged and unwashed refugees, some of them wearing face masks, Pence said he would not take the word of any of the caged men about how bad conditions were in the cage. Some of them had been caged for 40 days, were wearing the same clothes they had been caged in, and hadn’t washed or brushed their teeth during their entire time in the cage. The stench of unwashed bodies was overwhelming. There was not enough space for them to lie down in, and in any event there were no beds or pillows to place on the concrete floor, only metallic blankets.
In ‘Tough’ Visit, Pence Uses Crisis He Helped Create To Push Immigration Overhaul
That’s the plan
Feature not bug
Totally disable the Department of XXXXXXX
“See” it’s all fucked up
We need to institute XXXXX draconian policy
Works for everything from Immigration to Envirionment
The visit was a major disaster for Pence and the administration. Reporters did a good job of telling us what they saw and smelled. They broke through the photo op and got to the truth because it’s impossible to hide.
I was struck by 3 things:
Trump is bothered enough by reports of abuse to try to PR his way out of it.
Pence was set up to take the fall if it failed.
If Pence were smart (he’s not), he’d tell Senate GOPers that supporting this policy is a suicide mission for 2020 and they should use political capital now to force Miller out.
We learned this week that sustained pressure can break this administration. Break him on immigration and Trump is politically dead.
The Trump Administration policy of “zero tolerance” -of treating human beings like rabid animals -has been an abject failure in terms of their stated goal of reducing immigration at the border, and, even if successful, would be an entirely unacceptable policy in my view. So they choose to double down on a failed policy by subjecting those seeking refuge to even harsher conditions. This is not the America I know and would make me ashamed of being “Christian” if this is Christianity.
