In Sentencing Kate Cox To Suffer, The Texas Abortion Ban Is Working Just As Intended

Righteous enough in the middle ages to kill their own in the name of the king. The story behind the Red Hand of Ulster says it all.

Has to come…no?

Except in the scope of their power and authority in their respective countries, there is no real difference between officials in the contemporary Republican Party in this country, and Vladimir Putin in his.
Or, for that matter between individuals like this monstrously evil man (Paxton) and Hitler, Mussolini, or any other fascist dictator.

Can’t believe my father spent decades in boats and submarines fighting the people the thrownaway states now consider a leader.

There were a lot of Republican voters in Ohio and Kansas voting for the right to abortion. There had to be given the strong majorities in states where Republicans outnumber Democrats. This is one of those rare issues that can cut across party lines.

“No one disputes that Ms. Cox’s pregnancy has been extremely complicated,” the Texas Supreme Court intoned. “Any parents would be devastated to learn of their unborn child’s trisomy 18 diagnosis. Some difficulties in pregnancy, however, even serious ones, do not pose the heightened risks to the mother the exception encompasses.”

And there you have it boys and girls. I don’t give a shit what the law technically says. The way that it is written reflects the above sentence written by the Texas Supreme Court.

“Suffering, injury, potential lasting damage, the will of an adult to prioritize her safety over a fetus that cannot survive — these are not important considerations in the state of Texas.”

Dont ever tell me again that the “Christians” of Texas give a shit about anything but their own little vision of a truly vengeful god. If they did they would vote all of these misogynistic cretins right out of office.

Paxton is a Trumper so you will not find anything lower.

Want to hit myself upside the head for saying this, but the stories told loudly by Kate Cox and other women afflicted by restrictions on therapeutic abortions can maintain the electoral momentum that might otherwise fade by November 2024. Fear and anger over the abortion issue can be used to drive turnout just as fear and anger against ‘the other’ drive right wing turnout. Democrats can use that to motivate in a way that calm, productive government and Biden stability can’t.

The goal should not be to flip Trump voters. It should be to increase voter registration and turnout (including youth turnout) and blast these cretins out of office. Purging the anti-abortion crowd has the benefit of purging the anti-LGBTQ+ crowd and the racist crowd and the pro-gun crowd and the anti-democratic crowd at the same time cause they’re all the same people. At both the state and the national level. Texas has low turnout, so finding votes should be easier. Rinse and repeat in the other red states.

ETA: Forgot to include the book banning crowd and the Christo-fascist crowd. Them too.

To paraphrase Dennis Green, they are who we thought they are.

Will never return to visit either, nor should any pregnant woman.

Heck, if given the means, women who reside there would be wise to live elsewhere during week 20 through birth, just in case.

Yes, i know that’s a sliver of a minority. More proof the law works just as intended.

Religious freedom ends with the Texas government.

Try to think about our WWII vets and civilians and wonder what the World would be like today if they were the cowards the Republicans are today.

The difference is Cox had the resources to 1) hire an attorney and file suit and 2) leave the state and have an abortion anyway.

Correct, they voted for protections on the referendum. But notice that they keep voting to office the same SOBs that tried to take them away. That is why I call them Team Red voters, they just can’t vote any other way.

I disagree with the “good reason” for focusing on laws with no exceptions.

It was always a fool’s errand to try guessing in advance, just how much cruelty would be too much cruelty, for people whose world view we already knew to be intrinsically cruel.

To give women conditional sovereignty over their internal organs, but only if they can prove in court that their insemination was involuntary and/or from their blood relative, and/or that they are some unspecified percent likely to die during pregnancy or childbirth, in the opinion of the DA and not the doctor, is to sanctify and codify the judgement of women into law. Which we already knew to be the rightists’ whole point.

Not just anecdotal data. A few hospital closures, OB/Gyn docs moving from Idaho to Oregon, staffing issues. In TX, OK, and TN too.

Idaho’s obstetrics exodus is not happening in isolation. Across the country, in red states like Texas, Oklahoma and Tennessee, obstetricians — including highly skilled doctors who specialize in handling complex and risky pregnancies — are leaving their practices. Some newly minted doctors are avoiding states like Idaho.

“Idaho calls itself a quote ‘pro-life state,’ but the Idaho Legislature doesn’t care about the death of moms.” - Dr. Amelia Huntsberger, the Idaho obstetrician, now in Oregon.

Which was the point. She had the means, she was already a mother. And she was young enough to want to have another child.
If she hadn’t brought this to court, and just went to NM then we wouldn’t have a clear understanding of what this hardship will do those that don’t have the time or means to travel to another state. We wouldn’t get Paxton being the asshole bully that he is, and the TXSC making medical judgements.

It will be interesting to see if that pattern holds. There hasn’t been a state wide election in KS or OH for state offices, yet.
