In Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin, GOP Consolidates Power

It started out mostly because the idiot media did it, despite the fact that the titles of office remain with the office and are not granted for life.
Now everyone does it.

Let’s compromise. I’m okay with him using it as long as he prefaces it with a “disgraced ex-“.

Depends largely upon skin tone for possession, but the authorities are not likely to look the other way for distribution. Not that weed is a high priority, of course.

I’m waiting to see how the opening of dispensaries is going to proceed in NYC. I’ll catch the occasional whiff of skunky bud when I’m walking around so pushing it indoors when legalization is in place will probably be the case.
I remember when tattoo parlors were finally regulated in the late 70’s, which is an apt comparison. One opened not far from where I grew up in the suburbs. It was professionalized with the designs on the wall and a series of chairs. It also wasn’t a nuisance to the community.

The media can’t have us thinking that they’ll interview just any old body.

At least one small town in New Mexico where there is a big greenhouse has complained about the smell. That heavenly smell. The old ones don’t like it, by and large.

Ah, reminiscences of the Post editors:

https://www.politico.com/media/story/2012/01/the-real-story-of-headless-body-in-topless-bar-as-argued-by-veterans-of-the-post-000201/

“Hang on, Vinnie, we’re not a hundred per cent sure it’s a topless bar!”

Vinnie jumped on top of his desk and waved his arms.

“It’s gotta be a topless bar!” he cried. “This is the greatest f------ headline of my career!”

Vinnie got his wish. The topless-bar angle checked out, and within minutes the presses were rolling.

I called the cops, but they didn’t know if the place was topless or not. I had someone try the bar, but there was no answer. We reached out for people who lived in the neighborhood, phone listings. Nothing. It was closing in on our deadline now. So I dispatched a young woman reporter named Maralyn Matlick to go to the bar and see first-hand if she could determine whether or not it was topless.

A few minutes before deadline, the reporter called in to say the bar was locked up tight. There were no signs, no advertisements about it being a topless place. I asked her if she could see inside. She said she’d try. She somehow was able to pull herself up and peek into a window of the bar. That’s when she saw it. A sign inside that said: “Topless Dancing.” Matlick was ecstatic. She called me to tell me the news, and just like that, New York City tabloid history was made.

Just might have been the greatest headline of all time.

Many people seem confused that freedom of speech means only freedom from the government making repercussions for saying something. Anyone else is just exercising their first amendment rights

Some context: the gerrymandered maps in NC and OH are going to be thrown out by the state courts. The gerrymandered map in TX isn’t more aggressive than the one they had in '10 and is more of an incumbent protection racket. That said, the Fed law suit vs TX does have a good shot at requiring at least 1 district to be redrawn (Dallas Metro area) and probably 1 in the San Antonio/West TX area, which would have a ripple effect elsewhere in the state.

The GA map is a gerrymander but will likely be a dummymander before too long. The changes to the GA election law where county boards can be replaced by the state are more worrisome.

The WI gerrymander is bad, but the fact is that geographically speaking the Dem vote is more concentrated than the GOP vote, so I’m not sure a fair map would do more than add 1 seat for the Ds. Keep in mind that the old gerrymanders of MI and PA have been thrown out by the voters and courts.

In short, the GOP did their aggressive subversion of Dems and minorities in 2010 and they ended up losing control of Congress. This year’s maps will end up with around 226 seats that Biden carried in 2020, with many of the competitive seats trending left fast.

Gerrymandering is now helpful for Dems and the GOP can only hold off the tide that’s coming for so long as Biden is unpopular. I do not expect Biden to be unpopular for most of '22. He is due for an upswing and I do believe that Omicron will accelerate the end of the pandemic.

Equally, if not more, important, America has moved to a decision point to isolate and move past the unvaxxed, which cuts significantly into the GOP’s vote share. There’s a significant overlap (though not 100%) among the unvaxxed and hard right GOPers. By firmly declaring that such folks are a burden to society and will no longer have any influence on policy, it will shift the electorate to one where there is a sane coalition for good governance and that vote will align behind the Dems. These next 3-4 months should mark a key inflection point in the political history of the US where the Dems establish more incremental dominance of US politics.

Misunderstanding the first amendment is a feature of this crowd. And don’t dare lob criticism at them or else they’ll scream cancel culture.

Occasionally when I walk out of my garage there are a few young people half my age smoking weed outside. I feel like an old guy telling them to go across the street to the park like we used to.
Marijuana was decriminalized for small amounts in the late 70’s in New York. The bill was signed by Hugh Carey who was a moderately conservative Catholic Democrat. There was also a provision in it for medical marijuana but it was never implemented.
For we young people in the suburbs it was nice not to get harassed for small amounts, however in the city arrests for weed even small amounts were still common place. Gee I wonder why?

Many people seem confused over the concept of other people’s rights, to begin with. It’s peculiar, but they seem to think all the rights R belong to them.

Watching him on television and reading about his oversight of the truth and reconciliation committee was quite powerful. Lots of “holy crap, they did that!” I hope the 1/6 committee members and their staffers are taking a look at the footage from it.
