In Bitter Final Days Of NYC Mayoral Race, Ranked Choice Campaigning Came Under Attack

I’m a little surprised that TPM didn’t include Maya Wiley’s statement from yesterday in this article.

Wiley’s a class act, progressive, and smart as a whip. She’s also my daughter’s first choice! I don’t know who my daughter ranked for her 2nd through 5th choices. The only thing I know for sure is that she definitely didn’t include Yang. She despises him, doesn’t trust him, and doesn’t want him anywhere near the mayor’s office.

Yeah, I don’t understand that either. Ranked choice voting happens elsewhere in the US. It doesn’t take weeks to tally. What is going on here?

Like rent control ranked choice sounds good but more often has the opposite of the intended effect.

Make sure all chads on ballot are completely eliminated and make sure your ballot columns align across the butterfly fold.
Other than that what could go wrong?

I agree, Massie. Like, in Arizona, they tabulated accurate results in a matter of hours back in November. Why is whatever they’re doing now taking months?

I’ve been at tabulation centers on election night – a while ago – but the procedure then was all the precincts called into the city center with counts.

This isn’t that hard : - )

There’s one candidate on the ballot who definitely is not bitter. He’s all about love.

The paperboy is too damned high

He sure does look and sound happy. So maybe he’s just high enough.

I do love his love.

Ranked choice is great. Don’t blame ranked choice for Collins’ win, blame the stupid people in Maine.

Looks like Curtis Sliwa is going to be the Republican candidate. With 19.4% of the vote in, he is leading his one competitor 71.4% to 28.6%

Tell that to several millions New Yorkers who wouldn’t be able to live anywhere near NYC without it. And most of them are the sorts of people who actually make NYC so special. The free market is basically economic fascism.

My top pick was Garcia, Wiley my second. It was political experience over policy platform, and I’m actually impressed with Garcia’s record and platform. Green everything, parks, bike paths, community gardens, clean streets, composting. A greener NY is a better NY. Adams seemed too conservative and Yang too corporate, and Wiley doesn’t seem the best operative fit.

Garcia is leading the pack in Manhattan.

Adams leads in the other four boroughs.

Wiley is second in every borough except Staten Island, where she is forth behind Adams, Garcia, and Yang.

Cynicism? Sheesh, just talking about my job.

Paper cuts ain’t no joke, and after a few thousand ballots, you’re bound to get a few.
