Unless Beshear is looking to completely ruin his chance at the Dem nomination for 2028, he’s not allowing Elaine Chao anywhere near that Senate seat.
The Army’d been looking for a new standard sidearm for like 15 years at that point, including the ‘should be semi-automatic’. The Moro’s tendency to get themselves hopped up on narcotics before fighting so they wouldn’t feel pain did contribute to the decision to go with a .45 caliber round, but the immediate response to it was to re-issue the 1870 .45 revolvers.

Beshear’s not part of the math. He doesn’t get to appoint someone to finish out the term. It’s either going to a Special Election if McConnell is declared dead (which would require Chao’s presence, to allow a second doctor access, and consent to procedures, as next of kin), or the normal November election, since McConnell wasn’t running for re-election.
