OK. As bizarre as it may seem to you, most Alaskans will understand:
“because the king salmon were running and he wanted to fish”
as a completely reasonable explanation. Frankly, after that I’d have to think long and hard about not voting for him1. Sure, I’d come down on the side of Petola, but even if you don’t understand his motivations, lots of people from Alaska will. He actually does come across as normal, maybe not well suited for public office but normal.

I’m going to disagree with this:
I think it’s more that Trump has hopefully killed the peculiar brand of GOP patriotism we’ve been subjected to for the last 46 years or longer. That is the “America unconditionally love my version or leave it,” patriotism. Patriotism that proudly says that justice means punishment for you, protection for me.
