I’ll take good bets that the reasons for the delay have to do with being able to publicly embarrass these folks who, in good faith, have taken up the DHS’s offer to leave the country. Then these folks can be part of the 3,000 deportations a day metric the DHS has irrationally set up.
The DHS has absolutely no intention of helping these folks do things by the book. The DHS wants the attention and the focus to be on their deportation numbers. No amount of cooperation will make a hill of beans worth of difference.

I’m acquainting this self-deportation program with the same callousness in their arresting folks after a immigration hearing. Or detaining-such a clinical word, a US citizen for 3 days when that citizen showed their DL.
Cruelty is always their default mode.

If this is the example I’m thinking of he was taken to Texas and his DL – a Real ID, no less – was never returned, so he couldn’t fly home after his release. He spoke of his fear of running across the BP or, worse (if possible), ICE on his 1500± mile trip back to the LA area.

Even though she is not running for re-election, Joni Ernst is happy to try to grift off of this lady’s (in the article) misery and utter disappointment with the promise of America:

Ernst and 4th District Rep. Randy Feenstra thanked Noem for Des Moines Superintendent Roberts’ arrest.

… and let’s be clear - the gross sloppyness that is being seen in terms of “inadvertently” grabbing, detaining attempting to deport legitimate US Citizens … ain’t just carelessness - the focus on “illegal” immigrants is BS … the rabid dogs propelling this all forward would leap at the opportunity to forcibly deport any & all non-white immigrants - illegal or legal …
