Democratic-leaning parts of the country are not the only losers in President Trump’s anti-immigrant scheme to hijack the census.

Everything trump does will have to be undone by investigations and truth commissions.

The people who are missing and hard to count are not just typical Democratic voters,” Sunshine Hillygus, a Duke University professor who has served on the Census Scientific Advisory Committee, told TPM.

“Rural communities — and frankly Republican states — are very much at risk, not only of losing federal funding, but also of potentially losing out when it comes to representation.”

Never mind that rural red states are harmed…
BUT MORE blue states and BIPOC people are harmed…

That’s the Trumpian Souther Strategy…
Which some of his base would NOT mind “taking it” or sacrificing just to “own the libs”!

And let’s NOT forget Tx Lt Gov’s “sacrifices” = KAG (Killing American Geriatrics) for wall street!

The one true counterbalance we’ve had to this overwhelmingly evil administration is Trump’s blatant incompetence and lack of focus. Imagine how bad thing’s would be right now if Trump wasn’t such a complete idiot?

The important thing is that Trump gets what he wants, not that it actually accomplishes the things he thinks he wants.

I think Texas and Florida are going to fight this like hell.

no… it’s that trump gets the credit regardless of whether or not it’s done and regardless of it’s actual use.

How many Republicans does it take to change a lightbulb?
None. They all just clap in darkness as soon as Trump tells them he did it.

Dumb question but, that’s it? They fudge the numbers and we have to live with it for 10 years?

I think the census should be redone in 2021 or ASAP. Two reasons: to get it right and to provide jobs for a lot of people. It’s easy to argue that Covid-19 screwed it up–you don’t even have to mention Trump.
There is no reason the census can’t be done again, or even done every year. The constitution just says “at least every 10 years as the law directs.”
Redistricting also doesn’t have to be done only once every 10 years; it can be done anytime–so saith the Supreme Court (thanks, Texas!).

Incompetence in governance is a form of evil itself.

For example, a more competent, but equally evil administration, would have provided a much better pandemic response…because its in their best interests to do so. Minimize impact on the economy, be seen as a hero for saving lives and thus coast to easy re-election and shore up international power as being a hero for the world.

But the incompetent one we have, didn’t and can’t. Which results in thousands of deaths and and cratering the economy, facing certain defeat in November and America banned from travelling to basically every country in the world.

Not necessarily.

Past Censuses have been ignored by Congress before…perhaps most infamously the 1920 Census, which resulted in Congress bypassing the “1 Rep per 30,000” requirement and setting their own limit on the House size.

The Census does impact other things besides Apportionment, but most of those can be adjusted by Congress anyway, or another census can be taken for those reasons.

Most of Trump’s policies adversely impact the bright red states. Nobody on Trump’s team is competent. If they were they would be doing a better job with his policies.

And then came Barr with the cleanup.

If you had told me that a president had the power to fuck up the census, the Post Office, and threaten the possibility of screwing up an election 4 years ago I would have said no way. Ignorance is definitely bliss, it seems.

I was listening to a former Republican on Chris Hayes’ podcast this morning, and he said something interesting and rather terrifying. He said although Trump can not officially delay the election, what he can do is order DHS to grab all of the ballot boxes in Dade county, for example, on the pretense that they have seen widespread irregularity. He said there are dozens of ways he can delegitimize the election that no one has even imagined.

Not a reassuring thought. Trump is turning me into a catastrophizer, and my brain is suffering as a result.

That’s because the government is only collecting everyone’s personal data so they can come take your guns.
