This sounds a lot like the police in the Tennessee case were lazy and incompetent. That is normal for police across the Midwest and South. Some additional laws would clearly help but in Carter’s case the cops should have hung around and escorted her out of the house. It was clear the perp was hanging around waiting for the cops to leave.
It also sounds like the perps parents didn’t follow through on his assault on them. He probably callled and begged forgiveness.
I have a hunch Jack Daniels was involved in all the assaults and the murder.
Some states simply don’t take domestic violence seriously which is sad since a high percentage of officers being shot happen in domenstic violence cases.
This is heartbreaking and infuriating. Our country is sick, and the Republican Party is the reason. It is responsible for so much suffering and death, not only here but also around the world. And its death toll is only beginning, because the GOP is also the biggest reason the US has made such a poor response to climate change, which is already causing and will continue to cause unspeakable unnecessary horror. The Republican Party is a collective psychopath.
I don’t think Republicans understand how they are committing party suicide by pursuing these policies. If the SC really overturns laws that are meant to protect women from gun violence by a partner, no matter how weak they are, they will start another angry feedback cycle. Combined with Dobbs, it may just finally turn the tide away from gun violence in this nation…women have had enough of this crap and are angry at how they are losing rights and power as Republicans try to take us back to the 50s (19 or 18, take your pick).
Maybe we have to take this step backwards to get people to take their rights seriously enough to put all these conservative policies in the grave and give us a nation that actually values its people.
They are very much on a path to massive backlash against guns with their terrible policies. You’ll not be surprised to learn that the 5th Circuit decision that led to the SCOTUS case is awfully reasoned:
Apparently, it only passes the “Bruen test” if its applied prejudicially against groups of people for “the preservation of political and social order”, rather than being specific to the risk. That would mean that a law banning gun ownership against ‘men’ or ‘white men’ would pass muster, but not one against domestic abusers.
Its a bad decision based on a poor precedent.
If only peace had a lot of cold hard cash.
I have one question for elected officials who think imaginary gun rights are more worthy of protection than real people who are being murdered. - “What the fuck is wrong with you?”
I volunteered at our local Shelter (mostly answered hot line) in the past. Missouri is not the most forward state but there were dedicated activists who made a big difference (lobbying the legislature, providing training for police/sheriffs and volunteers). Small towns were generally a problem because the attitude of that’s between the 2 parties is difficult for many to change.

As the room was cleared, The Tennessean reported that “the crying of multiple Covenant School parents could be heard” along with the shouts from angry protesters.
After the public was expelled, including those who’d sat quietly, state legislators went on to pass House Bill 7064. The bill allows enhanced gun permit holders, cops, and military members—both active duty and retired, on-duty and off-duty—to be able to possess and carry a handgun at any public school building, bus, campus, or grounds.
The gun worshippers know that allowing scum to own guns invites murder. They simply don’t care if you are murdered or if their kids kill themselves. What motivates them is that they live in sick fear that someone would see them as people too sick to own guns. You are nothing but so much collateral damage and it won’t end until the man who sold the weapon and the cops like the one who sent this woman to her death are charged as auxillaries to murder. That cop belongs in prison as does the scum who sold the weapon to the piece of human garbage who pulled the trigger.
