New York City released new numbers on the COVID pandemic on Tuesday, bringing the death toll to more than 10,000.
New York City today has reported 3,778 additional deaths that have occurred since March 11: āthe death certificate lists cause of death āCOVID-19ā or an equivalent.ā
So we are running at ~30% of the case-confirmed COVID total, not bad compared to Italy and Spainā¦
If only the WHO, Hillary and Obama hadnāt kept Donnie totally in the dark, we wouldnāt be in this mess.
The number of excess is likely slightly higher once they figure in the lack of trauma deaths from transportation accidents (which are down) and local violence (which is down).
Nice job, Josh!
While simultaneously being horrible news.
Thatās why this is just a quick estimate, to do it right you have to look into the details of all the deaths. That will require going through everything, and odds are they havenāt produced the statistical data yet as their hands are full. It will take a few months, at least, but eventually we will get a more complete picture of how many people died due to the pandemic, how many were excess deaths caused by the medical system overload (so not direct COVID victims), and how many are likely deaths that would have happened otherwise. Taking into account things like the fewer accidental deaths by car, bike, walking around will be a factor, as will more deaths at home due to accidents, and so many other things.
Whatever the result, itās going to be higher than what we know now, and COVID deaths will probably be higher than what was reported, both due to the circumstances and due to some people monkeying around with the statistics to make things look better than they are (I have no doubt that in some red states deaths are being disguised or ignored to keep the counts lower). I hope that some of this research is finished by October, though with the push to reopen and the likelihood that red states will go back to normal and have outbreaks, we may not be fully out of the woods by then.
The # of deaths also isnāt accounting for those dying alone at home unnoticed because there is no one who would be checking on them. I suspect as the weeks wear on more of these will be discovered one way or another. Wouldnāt be surprised if that adds at least a dozen a day to the totals.
Some fraction of these deaths are the direct result of Trumpās actions/inactions. Only a fraction, to be sure. And the awfulness of the news goes far beyond that accountability.
Nonetheless, as Rebecca Solnit suggested in a Vox interview recently: it turns out Trump did kill a bunch of people on 5th Avenue, and so far at least, heās getting away with it
Not very many according to Trump. So few we need to get back to work so a few more that need to die, will die.
An article by Ivanka Trump from a couple weeks ago!
Pretty astounding how long reporters wait for Trumpās press briefings!
Yes it isā¦
I use this quote because it so appropriate
āOne death is a tragedy, a million is a statisticāā¦
And for the record, I have a relative who is currently fighting COVID-19ā¦
A 99 year old WWII veteran in Brazil was released from a Brazilian hospital today after recovering from it.
Best wishes.
We canāt believe any reports published by NYC or New York state. Why? Well not only is New York a democratic state, Manhattan and Long Island are surrounded water. Hear that? W-a-t-e-r. Weird and . . .sad. In addition, lots of Puerto Ricansāwho speak Spanish. Ugh!!-- live in NYC and we all know they exaggerate their mortality rates and donāt appreciate the utility of paper towels.
Iām merely channeling dumpf and m inner right-wing talk radio host.

A big fraction.
I live in Texas. Rural is mostly red. Urban is mostly blue. Suburban purple.
And certainly not just you-- but this is a broad brush that ignores the mix of political leanings in all areas in any given state. People in minority by numbers in those places-- who feel the same way you and I do-- are going to contract it. Some will die.
The mayors in the major metro areas? I donāt think our/Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, nor the Harris County Executive, Judge Lina Hidalgo-- will relent to Gov Greg Abbott in a situation where heās making a demand to open for business any more than we are already. Certainly not in an arbitrary situation without a lot more testing-- to drive enough data to make the correct decision.
Might be easier to have this view if residing in a āblue stateā I suppose.
But Texas is a huge and diverse place. Demographically, Dems arenāt a minority here. But thanks to Bugman Tom Delay-- weāre still gerrymandered in a fashion that keeps the state from going purple. But itās close.
And? By dint of what could occur in those rural locales this year? It might be the time.
This uptick in the count is going to happen everywhere, first in big cities, then soon in smaller communities. Who is counting the homeless, the people living under bridges, the people living alone w/o families, the people living off the grid, it is going to catch up to everyone who should be in charge and by that I donāt mean the 1st responders and health care workers, I mean the people in charge of the health and welfare of our nation, our elected officials.
So sorry to learn this, friend. Best wishes and hopeful thoughts for recovery.
Wow
And wow todayās press briefing was all Trump and no one else!
