This article is part of TPM Cafe, TPM’s home for opinion and news analysis. It was originally published at Balls and Strikes. I will say this about Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican senator who died on Saturday at 71: He had Donald Trump clocked right from the jump. During the 2016 presidential primary, Graham, who spent years carefully…
Lindsey Graham was and always has been an opportunistic piece of shit. His death came thirty years too late.
Donald Trump is a liar about himself, and is sticking with that tactic. Lindsey Graham was a liar about himself, and stuck with that tactic until his death. Donnie will do the same.
Not often that I’m glad somebody is dead, but this is a reminder of why.
In today’s politics you are defined by your worst behavior on your worst day. Such actions neutralize all of the easy collegiality, bipartisanship, support for widows/orphans, etc. Ergo, Graham should be tarred & feathered forever for being an abider of insurrection (Jan6 + pardons), making him an insurrectionist, too. The Constitution, which he pretended to pledge an oath to, says insurrectionists can’t hold office. If he got that memo, he didn’t read it. Let’s not forget he has never said Boo about any of the subsequent ant–Consitutional behaviors/actions of Trump, either, whether going to war without Congress or committing corruption on vast scales or pissing on the 1st and 14th amendments. Graham will be rightfully buried and forgotten except by his rent-boys in their memoirs.
It’s been said that
Donald Trump is a weak man’s idea of a strong man.
Throughout his career, Lindsay Graham attached himself to other political leaders he perceived as strong leaders: from Newt Gingrich in the House (where he was one of the Clinton impeachment managers), to John McCain in the Senate, and ultimately to Donald Trump when the Republican Party transmogrified into MAGA-world.
In at least two of the three cases Graham’s perceived strong men are really unprincipled weak men. Graham himself was a weak man completely lacking in principles.
But timing is everything.
