How Harlan Crow Slashed His Tax Bill By Taking Clarence Thomas On Superyacht Cruises

Those little beggars might leave fingerprints on all that polished mahogany and gold plated doorknobs.
Besides, what could an orphan do for old Harlan? Thomas is much more valuable a purchase for a crooked, tax evading SOB.

To be fair, all one has to do is merely think of one’s yacht as a business and voila, you’re in the yacht renting business. Easy peasy.

I hope there is an I. Depth tax violation investigation. The other items yielded would likely be quite interesting…

Infuriating that these same misers that own the Supremes and Congress and the President, urge their reps to clamp down on tax restrictions for you and me. They took away our deductions for home and credit card deductions, which in the case of credit cards is a usury nightmare for lower and middle class taxpayers. They are against helping young people with obnoxious debt they accrued as students while they can write off bankruptcies by the young people can’t. The more I learn about the all the tax schemes of the wealthy, I just want to cry. Donate to ProPublica. They seem to be one of the few journalistic endeavors that dig and find out what is really going on. Everyone needs to understand that the rich do not support this country. They want to pay zero taxes and many do. For what? They don’t want to help orphans. They don’t want to support the common good. They don’t want people to get gov’t help. They are cruel and heartless and that is probably why the Republicans are cruel and heartless. Republicans are nothing more than handmaidens for the filthy rich.

(The lifetime/deathtime limit for tax-free total gifts/estates is $12.9 million in 2023. The first $17,000 (2017) per person each year is excluded as is “directly-paid to the institution, not reimbursed through the person” education and healthcare expenses.)

It is daydream of mine that Harlan, born to inherited wealth that had been gathered through skin-flint practices on daddy’s subcontractors, should have the opportunity to experience full-on fascism that he so admires, and that he takes his “public servant” that he has purchased with him for a long, long stay in Club Gitmo (no AC, please), after due process has ground him into a fine powder.

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas have stirred controversy by co-authoring a Supreme Court opinion declaring that yachts are people.

The sweeping opinion, which yachts’-rights organizations immediately hailed as “long overdue,” grants the luxury vessels the unlimited ability to entertain government officials on their decks in order to gain political influence.

“For decades, yachts have been tireless in their struggle to be treated like human beings,” Harland Dorrinson, the president of the National Council on Equality for Boats, said. “For them, this victory represents the end of a long, hard regatta.”

“The public should note that yacht owners have traditionally referred to their boats as ‘she,’ ” he added. “Given that, this is the most pro-female opinion this Court is likely to issue.”

But some legal scholars, such as Professor Davis Logsdon, of the University of Minnesota Law School, believe that reclassifying yachts as people could have unintended consequences.

“Thanks to the conservative super-majority on the Court, yachts are gaining rights at the same time that actual people are losing theirs,” Logsdon said. “In order to be treated like humans, people may soon have to claim to be yachts.”

Predicting who will stay true to far right ideology is where the Federalist Society comes in. They basically run a far right farm team from high school, through college and post graduate education and employment opportunities to identify and advance the true believers.

As the saying goes ”I have a dream”: A far right fascist takeover of the federal judiciary has been Leonard Leo’s dream for a long time. He has seen and arrived at the promised land: Bush v Gore, Citizens United, gutting the Voting Rights and Civil Rights Acts.

See, if it was me, if I was stupendously rich I wouldn’t bother to hire the accountants to get a write-off for chump change “lost” while bribing a lump of shit sitting on SCOTUS. Its not just the bribes that make my mouth fall open, it’s that they look for and find ways to pocket more money while making the bribes.

Someone remind me again of why this is such a great country.

This is becoming a more visible problem.

Key word: visible.

Here is how I look at this. From the article:

Another is whether Crow treated his trips with Thomas as deductible business expenses.

If the answer is YES and Crow treated his gifts to Thomas as a business expense, I take Crow at his word. What this means to me is Crow looked at what he was doing by taking Thomas on these trips was in fact buying access and influence. That is clearly in Crow’s mind, he was bribing or otherwise spending money to affect Thomas in how he ruled in issues involving Crow.

That is to me as a civil matter, it is now more likely than not that Crow in his mind was spending money to help his business interests when he did and does take Thomas out on the town. I’d be interested in how Crow reported his expenses in regard to what he does for Thomas’s mother.

Whether Crow using his Thomas giveaways has a business expense means anything to the Criminal lawyers, I will leave to them. If the answer is YES and Crow intended it to be a business expense does this give Crow the culpability required for it to be a crime and also what it would mean to Thomas?

What I will not leave to the criminal lawyers if Crow claims it is not and was never intended to be a business expense. Then clearly Crow taking it as a business expense is a crime.

As I posted in an earlier thread, the friends who hang around with Harlan are much more likely to hand Clarence their coat and order him to bring them a drink.

When repubs complain about how complicated federal tax laws are, ask them how many loopholes are designed exclusively for low income earners and if they would support getting rid of loopholes that have been used exclusively by multimillionaire earners in the last 10 years.

The simplest change to eliminate all this bullshit would be changing the tax basis for organizations, to unadjusted gross revenue. Nothing about vehicles or real estate should be tax deductible at all.

A more complex, less sweeping change would be to limit the depreciation and/or deductibility of all vehicles and all real estate, to revenue derived from that specific property or item. So a hedge funder can’t deduct the loss on their yacht against unrelated stock profits.

Yes, I’ve also thought this was the result of more careful Federalist Society vetting of candidates. And you’re absolutely right, that certainly is part of it.

Maybe I’ve become particularly paranoid about this, but Republicans always seem have a more organizational plan and response to political challenges than Democrats. Keep their “chosen ones” surrounded by a community of “friends”, keep them true to the cause.
