An aside, there were many many many Mexican Nationals that crossed just to work on that dam. If I remember correctly over 25% of the workforce was made up of non-US citizens.

Ya, people forget how recent is this idea sending federal agents to stop immigrants from working.
There is nothing more American than cowboys or more Texan than the King Ranch. Most of the cowboys in the King Ranch were Mexican. They even relocated into ranch land the whole population of a Mexican village that had flooded. So much for the Marlboro man.

Yes, but nativism goes way back. One could argue that ethnocentrism is universal, maybe even hard wired. When Washington was president Catholics were hated. Later, the Know Nothings hated anyone not born here. Somehow they still hated Native Americans. They hated Germans and Irish.
