The Democratic Party doesn’t have clairvoyants and mind readers on staff, so there is no way to know about disqualifying information if it hasn’t been revealed yet.
The truly disqualifying info about Platner with enough supporting evidence to be credible didn’t surface until a few days ago. We can’t ask for the impossible when it comes to vetting candidates, just what’s reasonable and hope for the best.
You don’t. You get the information you can, and make the best decision you know how to. Politics is always about choosing the lesser of two evils, so as not to enable the greater. As a friend of mine said to me last night: ‘Adulting sucks. The only easy answers involve really horrible things.’
Kinda … but since politics is more like “Calvin-ball” there really are no axioms that have footings that are secured to bedrock.
The logic of the lesser of two evils is often assaulted by some amalgamation of
Reasonable & fair-minded people are generally drawn towards according a modicum of discernment… and that becomes very very challenging when dealing in an environment where there are disingenuous actors propelled by their own agenda … and circumstances make it a “time is of the essence” situation.
None of those in any way refute the fact that if you don’t push for the lesser evil, you increase the chances of getting the greater evil. Time is always of the essence. That’s why you make the best decisions you can with the information currently available to you, rather than trying to have an unobtainable level of perfect knowledge.
There is never a situation where you shouldn’t be looking to choose the option that’s least-bad. Sometimes, if you get really lucky, that option will be so least-bad, it’s actually good. But you can’t count on that.
Another (related) axiom that is, in fact, rooted in bedrock: Campaign aspirationally, vote defensively.
While - It has always seemed to me that the deliberation & slow-walking of forming of conclusions about John Edwards was definitely not in the best interest of anyone … so - in that case - ponderous process = bad.
But it also will always seem to me that the rush to "conviction " & swift shove out of the door that was given to Senator Al Franken was, upon reflection - a gross injustice.
While politics is akin to sausage making … one does need to be careful not to be so hasty that we get any chopped fingers in the product.
Yup. And figuring out how fast you need to move in a given situation? Another of those ‘lesser of two evils’ choices where there’s imperfect information and all you can do is try to make the best decision you can.

False accusations of rape is a very small and rare problem in comparison to the number of rapes that go unreported.
Plus, even men are much more likely to be raped than to be falsely accused of rape.
And that’s why the existence of text messages that predate his entry into politics by more than 2 years matters so much.

The Maine department of the secretary of state has said that as of Thursday morning, “no official withdrawal notice has yet been received” from Graham Platner.
“As of now, no official withdrawal notice has yet been received from Mr. Platner,” Jana Spaulding, Maine’s deputy secretary of state for communications, said in a statement to the Guardian. “A public declaration is not an official withdrawal, and a candidate must formally withdraw to the Elections office in writing, including signature.”
Spaulding added that the notice may be received by email, such as a scanned letter attached as a PDF, but must include a signature.
In order for Democrats to finalize an alternative Senate nominee in Maine, Platner needs to officially withdraw from the race by 13 July at 5pm ET, according to state law. This would then grant Democrats a two-week window, until 5pm ET on 27 July, to pick a replacement.
At this moment nothing has changed since a liar announced he was going to drop out, he hasn’t bothered to sign the notice with the state or rein in his ardent supporters carrying his water trashing and lying about his accusers.
Tragically, this whole thing has underscored – yet again – the incredible disconnect between the way (most) men and women see and experience the world. Every one of us knows a victim of sexual assault or rape (including not a few TMP posters) yet most men are oblivious to that. They’d tell you that’s crazy! They don’t know any rape victims.
Well, they do. But because their Y-chromosome privilege (mostly) shields them from sexual assault or rape, the idea that women face these risks daily rarely if ever occurs to them. For the most part, they just don’t have to think about it.
(It’s sort of like abortion: Everyone knows a woman who’s had an abortion. Men who say they don’t know any such women, and dispute the statistics, likely have unapproachable, judgmental, or sexist personalities that warn women to keep their mouths firmly shut around them.)
Another disconnect is between the ability of some posters here to absolutely condemn Trump for all the sexual assaults and rapes of which he’s been credibly accused, but then make all manner of excuses for Dems.
Platner’s hopelessly-flawed candidacy has shown us who a lot of TPM posters truly are, and I’ve been shocked by some whom I previously took as reasonable, empathetic voices. I guess in my experience it’s sexism, racism, and transphobia that most often surprise you about people you thought you knew.
And this is just another example of that, disappointingly, among TPM posters.
I suspect what was he was looking for, before bowing out, was some kind of ‘get out of jail free’ card so he could continue in political life.
The only who actually got that card is Donnie.
