As a black woman in her late 50’s I’ll jump in on this. Most of my adult life I’ve censored myself so I wouldn’t sound like an angry black woman. I know it didn’t matter that I had an advance degree and had a director level position in a large corporation. I would be judged and dismissed if I showed what others deemed too much emotion.
She didn’t say it the way they wanted her to say it which is to shut up or speak softly.

Remember when BLM supporters stormed police stations with guns and bear spray, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries on both sides immediately after Rep Waters’s comments? Me neither.
That said, in order to clearly maintain our obvious high ground on the debate over what happened on Jan 6th, I think it’s important that we choose our words very carefully when speaking about mobilizing for what’s right. I’m not saying Rep. Waters was wrong, or that the people calling her out aren’t totally hypocritical and disingenuous. But it will serve us better to find clearly non-violent language to encourage protest and resistance.
I’d say it’s more of a “It’s not me, it’s ‘them’” personality. “Them” encompassing all different connotations.
If you’re spilling your guts on the record to the NYT, I’m guessing you don’t care about getting fired anymore.

Republicans don’t understand confrontation without violence, so they hear Waters’ talk of confrontation and hear violence.
Essentially, she was telling a community that has been cowed to have courage and not to hide despite the violence officially fomented against them. But since she’s a Black woman, that’s obviously out of bounds for you and for Congressional Republicans. Feh.
