Speaking of “tree hugging hippies” …back in the day (1969-74 era) when I was liable for the draft (remember the draft?) my lottery number was 335 and my tiny home village took to 330. But I had to show for the physical anyway (turn yer head and cough). It was noted that my spine was not ruler straight caused by polio in my toddlerhood hence jumping into a foxhole could injure it (I was told). So… I was issued a new draft card on the spot which was a very strange and unusual thing to have happen. That card, which I still have shows a classification which reads “not currently subject to classification action”. I have assumed all these years that meant that the 4F guys would hafta go before me. My dad, when he heard of these happenings, broke out a bottle of Bulleit’s 10 yr old bourbon and we shared a shot.
I did not try to avoid anything to do with the draft. I would have gone if called up. I was that innocent then.

The military is nothing but a huge, super-expensive jobs program; so yeah it should be inclusive to reflect the US population. Besides the bravery, elan, or whatshit of an individual rifleman doesn’t matter very much since WW1, if at all.

Had a II-S (college deferment) from end of 1969 to spring of 1973 when I graduated college. Then they ended the draft.
Found out years later that I have a small hole in a vertebrae located at the base of my spine (basically a spina bifida) discovered when I had an xray due to pulled muscles in my back.
Doctor told me it was no big deal but would have most likely kept me out of the draft with a
4-F. Go figure.
