I remember Zoe spinning in circles when we returned home to her. It was a wondrous thing because she knew we hadn’t abandoned her.
She died of lung cancer at just eight years old, I had two other goldens, they died at 14, I expected she would too.

I’d like to see TPM cover this, repubs looking into conditions at the jail 1/6 criminals are being held in. Poor boys, they were just fooling around. And of course EmptyG is one of the miscreants leading the charge.
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/09/us/politics/jan-6-prisoners-republican-investigation.html
The investigation — part of a broader effort by Republicans to rewrite the history of the riot in part by portraying participants as the true victims — has been a top priority of Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican of Georgia.
On Thursday, Ms. Greene wrote to the D.C. mayor, Muriel Bowser, demanding answers to questions, a tour of the correctional facility in southeastern Washington, and access to staff and inmates to conduct interviews by March 23. She and two other lawmakers also asked for all documents and communications about the Jan. 6 detainees’ complaints regarding the conditions.
So this story is saying Garland’s the problem but saying it politely. Not i̶n̶t̶e̶r̶e̶s̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ oops, innerstin’

Another half-hour, another headline. And so it goes, every day.
GOP Rep. Likens Biden’s Capital Gains Tax Plan To ‘Putting Somebody In Prison Before They’ve Done The Murder’
Is it possible to be a Republican and not be a shithead?
The stuff about the diversification was directed at the same millionaires relying on that single source for all their “individual wealth management” services and accounts, not the corporations who would have different interests and needs.
Th Democrats need to turn the hearing into an investigation into prison conditions in general, not just for the J6 prisoners. Highlight that prison conditions are terrible for everyone, and that they aren’t worse for the J6 prisoners specifically.
The DC jail is notorious. Probably a better fit for Brazil or similar for conditions.
Best to scope out the hotels in the area and their online reviews before criming in a locale.
Well, fine. And under this scheme, they wouldn’t have to pay capital gains taxes on those stocks for this year.
I don’t see how this is an unfair proposition.
Good enough reason to make the hearing about prison conditions in general.
I have stocks going on decades now. Obviously I’m not in the target group, but if I were, I’d have paid off of theoretical values each year, but quite possibly never actually realize any gain at all in a worst-case scenario.
If I’m not actually getting anything, why should I have to pay “rent” just to maintain the asset?
Meme stocks are a perfect example of how theoretical prices can be manipulated, leaving someone with a high tax, but no actual benefit from it, unless they sold at the increase, in which case we already tax them for it.
Yes, but those patriots that tried to save the country on J6 aren’t the same as those ruffians that have committed serious crimes, don’t’cha know…? [/s]
I don’t disagree. Too bad the only interest Greene etal have is for the Jan. 6ers. Maybe their inquiry will do some good and perhaps call attention to the inhumane conditions in jails all over this country. Somehow I doubt it.
From the NYTimes
The lawmakers said they were focused on whether Jan. 6 defendants were receiving worse treatment than other detainees. Ms. Greene said detainees told her they had been denied access to a Bible and Communion because they had refused to take the coronavirus vaccine.
One of the side benefits of this tax is that it eliminates BS meme stocks that don’t add real value to our economy. Much the same way that cutting off the free money spigot that’s been flowing in Silicon Valley for the last 15 years is forcing a reconning in terms of which companies actually hold real value.
The real economy doesn’t and probably shouldn’t run through a betting market. It should be the same with our retirements.
BHO started to make prison conditions an issue he was going to work on, but somehow it never amounted to anything. But we also know there are too many people who could do something to improve prison conditions who also believe prisoners because of their crimes or even if they’re just held until a hearing date or something similar shouldn’t expect humane conditions, it’s a part of their punishment. Sadly, we’re just below China in the number of people we incarcerate.
@castor_troy FYI
It’s not really an asset then is it? Just an agreement.
Rules are made to be broken.
Which is essentially the argument against taxing it until realized in a sale.
I don’t follow anybody on Twitter but I see that Bobo, or Bozo, is trending, and it’s hilarious.
Every homeowner pays property tax every year - this is a version of wealth tax on unrealized gains. Also, people over 72 with IRAs or 401Ks have to take a Required Minimum Distribution every year on which income taxes must be paid - the RMD amount is determined by the value of the account on Dec. 31.
Giving the uber-wealthy a bye because you can’t tax unrealized gains is pure hogwash, a purely self-serving argument that insures they pay far less in taxes relative to wealth than your average citizen.

Ha! I just posted about him on another thread. Keep him far away from any discussion.
