Tennessee Republican Scotty Campbell — one of the legislators who voted to expel the Tennessee Three — resigned from his House seat on Thursday after it became public that he sexually harassed a legislative intern.
Love that all the attention on Tennessee for expelling Reps. Justin Jones of Nashville Justin Pearson of Memphis has put the focus on House Speaker Cameron Sexton and his secrets (true residency, taxes, travel expenses for the commute back to his district that he never made etc) It won’t make a difference but I love when Karma plays a visit.
It’s almost as if long term results of gerrymandering are extreme officials that operate in a cultural echo chamber who aren’t equipped to handle outside scrutiny
This culture of violence and retribution is completely lopsided. Why does that white, rightist, pervert have it less coming than average? Why does that panty sniffing predator get to be less afraid than average, of the young women’s brothers or fathers showing up with shotguns?
I see a straight line from this guy to Jeffrey Epstein and Donald Trump.
They seek power because the powerful have great freedom to indulge in their worst habits. Being above the law is a critical benefit.
If we had serious laws and didn’t permit the powerful to “police themselves,” the extra scrutiny inherent in public life would keep the vicious away from power.
But we don’t, so we are ruled by reprehensible scumbags.
Maybe he can follow in the illustrious footsteps of Blake Farenthold, one of our great former Arizona Reps. I detect a certain subtle resemblance.
What is Blake Farenthold doing now?
After resigning from Congress, Farenthold announced on May 14, 2018 that he would be serving as the legislative liaison for the Calhoun Port Authority at a salary of $160,000.10.
Exactly. Why are the fabulously rich not content to be simply well-off and comfortable for the rest of their natural life? Because, more often than not, being a billionaire allows you to transcend the customs, etiquette, rules, and even laws that bind the rest of us to decent behavior and which protect the vulnerable. Want to have sex parties with teenagers? Be Jeffrey Epstein (or cozy up to him).
Being a mere millionaire won’t get you these kinds of free passes. And clearly this elected rube doesn’t qualify either (though you can see what delusions he had about what “power” he may have had by being a lowly state rep).
This is why no one should ever support the superrich when they seek elected office.
You know, after the humor, it strikes me upon reading exactly what this guy said and how he is purported to have behaved that he is not just creepy but possibly sick in some very, very awful way. If he hasn’t raped anyone yet it sounds like it it is only a matter of time.
From Josh’s ed
“I told him zero, and he insisted that I was lying and told me not to lie. He then proceeded to ask how many women I’ve slept with and said he bets girls go crazy over me.”
Then, the victim says, Campbell offered to give her cannabis gummies to see her tattoos and piercings.
“I told him absolutely not, and he begged me for several hugs,” her email says.
“I was getting progressively more afraid and uncomfortable. He then reached out his hand towards me and grabbed me around my neck.
“I recoiled and said I felt sick and immediately left. That was the last night I ever spoke with or saw him. I blocked his number after that.”
Tennessee Republican Scotty Campbell … sexually harassed a legislative intern.
Ah … I think I see a glaring difference here. Did he harass them with a megaphone in the House well? I think that’s why he was allowed to skate as long as he did. Also, he’s a white Republican. That really makes a difference in terms of consequences.
