GOP Governor Makes Clear He Won’t Back Trump Weeks Before Election Day | Talking Points Memo

We had better get used to this kind of thing happening. Serious people leave the Trump camp. Trump attacks serious people. At least we will have clear identification of the functioning adults.

But his retail politics is in Massachusetts, where his voters include a good many Democrats.

Yeah glad he said it, but it doesn’t take any courage to stick your neck out in a state where Biden is above water by 37.7%. Especially when he could still run for governor again.

Trump could still turn it around!

Not in Massatwoshits, but I’m going to vote like he can everywhere else.

Let’s hope he wastes his time on National Republican politics instead of seeking a Senate seat

But he’s been a decent governor, hasn’t he? And the Mass Leg is controlled by dems?

For a Massachusetts Republican.

To 77.3%?

I really can’t say. He’s still willing to call himself a republican, so he wouldn’t get my vote no matter what. He needn’t worry about me however, I’m in PA.

Well, at least he’s working on it.

He didn’t go along with the Trump “let’s kill people” Covid response. He gets points for that.

Eh, this is Baker (my governor). He’s a MA Republican which means he’s a major outlier. Also he has to at least take this stance if he wants to be re-elected (Although not endorsing Biden is still cowardly, and he won’t get my vote as long as he holds onto that “R”).

I remember when my older brother got Reagan Religion in 1983. He sort of went , to my eyes, from being an insecure bully into a pure pod person in a heartbeat. I believe I heard Mom rummaging around in the kitchen for the carving knife before she cooled down. My baser self regrets she wimped out–would have made a great story.

Baker is more a conservative than a Republican assuming that words still have meaning.

He can’t win as a Democrat because he’d be primaried.
He can’t endorse the head of the Republican party because he’ll be voted out.

Instead he’s walking this tight rope of being a Republican who rejects the modern Republican Party. I don’t really see how that is sustainable in any real way, but maybe he’s just hoping to survive through the election.

I will say this defection doesn’t work in small numbers late in the game, for me anyway. If Gov Baker wanted to convince me he was disappointed in his party he would have rejected Trump about a year ago at the latest. If you are waiting for the polls to tell you the guy is a pair of cement shoes, the cement should have set around your feet too.
