GOP Contingent Throws Up Sound And Fury To More Ukraine Aid As Zelensky Visits - TPM – Talking Points Memo

Srsly. This news needs to be framed as “GOP faction supports Putin in Ukraine.” And I feel morally certain that the support goes the other way, too, if not in the form of direct payments (as Kevin McCarthy himself once “joked”), then in any number of other ways.

Many people are saying Putin has guaranteed them summer homes on the Crimean shore.

“How is the counteroffensive going?” reads part of the letter…“It would be an absurd abdication of congressional responsibility to grant this request without knowing the answers to these questions.”

And yet, these jackasses scoff at the idea of measuring the effect of throwing money at police.

Or of tax cuts to billionaires.

Or of subsidies to red-state farmers.

Or of…

Right. He was president of the Screen Actors Guild, but sold out to MCA head Lew Wasserman, screwing actors out of the residuals.

If anyone is old enough to remember it, St. Ronnie gave that TV speech after Iran-Contra unraveled. He said (and I think this is pretty close to a direct quote): “I still believe in my heart that we didn’t sell arms for hostages, but the facts say otherwise.” (!)

In other words the lights were on and nobody was home.

That’s it? Putin couldn’t get any more than that?

The Kremlin Caucus.

They’re merely following in the footsteps of their backstabbing Republican forebears in 1940-41 who opposed Lend-Lease and preparedness in the face of an existential threat. Remember Bob Taft, “Mr. Republican” whom the GOP venerates to this day? He was at the forefront of the American Quislings in the 1940s, and even opposed bringing the Nazi war criminals to justice at Nuremberg. Maybe that will be the template for current Republicans to follow should Putin, Lavrov, and Co. end up in the dock at the Hague.

Come on folks, the Republicans are running out of time to hand Ukraine over to Putin. All those juicy campaign contributions come with a “trip out of a 12-story window” clause. Fuck freedom, they have checks to cash.

Slowly but steadily.

Yes, very much so. They’re killing Russian soldiers and destroying Russian materiel at an astounding clip.

Our strategy is to provide Ukraine with the weapons, training and other support needed for them to obtain success on the battlefield. And President Biden’s “exit plan” is to not deploy American troops in the first place.

The administration does not define victory for Ukraine. Ukraine defines victory for Ukraine.

I’m the head of OMB. Please direct your inquiry to the Department of Defense.

Similar to our strategy in Iraq and Afghanistan.

How long do I have to be good for my word. Asking for Republicans.

Not even remotely similar.

Can’t be said enough.

It’s their country that’s been invaded, their soldiers dying and their civilians living under oppression in Russian occupied territory. They get to define victory and, if that includes returning to the pre-2014 borders, more power to them.

But that strategy was enacted by Republican presidents. Suddenly it’s a bad idea when there’s a Democrat in the WH.
