Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan (R), one of ex-President Donald Trump’s few Republican critics, announced on Monday that he will not be seeking reelection in 2022.
We will see more of this, the Republicans who refuse to follow Trump down the rabbit hole are going to be driven out of the party. We’ll be left with a party that believes in lies, and that’s willing to cheat to win elections at any cost, and also willing to turn violent against those who stand it its way. Whether that remains only verbally violent is still to be seen…we haven’t seen any attempted assassinations of Republican politicians by militias yet, but that’s going to be on the table the way things are going.
The real question is what the Republicans that actually believe in the Constitution and elections are going to do…if they meekly stand aside and continue to vote with Trumpublicans then nothing changes, but if they actually leave the Republican party and vote against Trump then we might start to see the disintegration of the Republican party. It is going to take leaders like Cheney and Duncan to get Republicans to stand against Trumpublicans and make it clear they are a danger to the nation…if they don’t get traction there is a real chance the entire Republican party becomes radicalized, and the nation can’t survive that many crazy people.
Depends on what the field is. If democrats win as a result of the “sane-republican” exodus, these defectors will claim credit and expect to be rewarded appropriately.
I think that’s a needle they can’t thread. Cheney, the other Republicans who speak out against Twice Impeached, and the ones who are silent but don’t agree with his politics will never endorse or support, much less campaign or vote for, a Democrat. Their practical options are either to continue voting (R) even when the candidate is a full on MAGA insurrectionist, or stay home and run the risk of a larger Democratic majority in Congress. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Principle might favor the latter in the hopes the GOP gets thoroughly trounced and is forced to return to some semblance of rationality, but I seriously question whether they would go that route.
O/T but speaking of second-in-commands stepping down…
Hey, Joe? I get that you want to avoid any appearance of political interference in how the CDC operates. Really, I understand. But this ain’t “operating”, it’s broken. And we can’t afford to have a nonfunctional CDC, losing whatever shreds of credibility is has left, at this critical point.
