Around 90 minutes after the postmaster general sought to assure Americans that he was pausing certain new initiatives “to avoid even the appearance of any impact on election mail,” the former deputy postmaster general appeared via webcam before an assembly of reporters, unimpressed.
But if sorting machines have already been dismantled or removed, Stroman said, the statement doesn’t assure the public that the machinery will be returned.
Smoke and mirrors…
Stroman’s skepticism is deserved since Mr. NO-Joy clearly knows what he is doing here, will profit from the demise of USPS through his futures purchase and has every reason to ensure that the mail-in voting will be disrupted to stop his eventual probe or prosecution should Biden win!
This isn’t “Smoke and Mirrors”. It’s nowhere near that sophisticated.
This is some sleazy dickhead saying “trust me” while he dumps kerosene in your living room. Some terrible news sites (hello, @tpm!) act like this should be treated credulously.
De Joy needs a long ‘time out’ I’m federal prison. 20-40 years with a minimum of 20 years before any possibility of parole can be considered. If Agent Orange pardons him, the states should convict him.
My skepticism needle remains deep in the red zone. “Ok, you win” is not in the GOP playbook. “Cheat, and when you get caught, cheat more” is basically their strategy. Lucy will not let us kick the football, guys.
DeJoy and Trump attempted to sweep this under the rug, but it’s not going to be that easy for them…they are hoping that they can appear to have stopped monkeying around with the system so the issue goes away with their turnabout. The press and the Democrats need to stay on top of them, both because it’s the right thing to do to stop their interference with the mail and because it’s a political winner as everyone appreciates what the USPS does.
Let’s see what comes out of the hearings, you can bet the Democrats are going to hammer DeJoy on this, and I bet they have few defenders on the Republican side, simply because it’s bad optics to say that delaying the mail is a good thing. At most, they’ll pass the baton to someone like Jordan to rail about unrelated nonsense and hope that’s enough to let Trump and company slip out of this one.
For example, DeJoy said Tuesday that “Retail hours at Post Offices will not change.” But Stroman pointed out this did not answer whether hours have already been changed — nor whether those changes would now be reversed.
My goodness, you’d almost get the impression that Mr. Stroman doesn’t quite completely trust Mr. DeJoy…
They better. Dejoy needs to resign immediately as Postmaster, prosecution for violations of his oath of office, his conflict of interest and his interference with mail delivery needs to be prosecuted.
And the “Acting” Postmaster needs to be a career postal official, with Civil Service and even Union Protections.
They better hammer this pos and they better have these hearings, no trust, no trust but verify, just no trust period and you make things right.
Was it just that? Or was it also used to keep those not involved out of the way? At 10PM, someone might be working overtime, and they might raise some red flags.
What America is going to have to count on is its Postal Workers; both inside and outside workers. Whistle blowers and union leaders lets go. This is a fucking war. No one appointed by the Rump can ultimately be trusted to do the right thing. De Joy may have seemed contrite but I’m sure there was a WH phone call.
The machines will come back but first there will have to be a no bid contract let. An environmental review. An engineering review to ensure the building will be safe for the equipment. And anything else we can think of to slow down and delay. Eventually it will be promulgated that there is just not enough time left before the election to guarantee the equipment will be operating. However the equipment will be in the building.
One thing to remember folks…DeJoy already swept out the USPS leadership and replaced them with his cronies, so a lot of experience on how things are supposed to work is gone. This makes it less likely that things will go back the way they were, simply due to incompetence and inexperience.
Another thing is that DeJoy has been talking to the WH and RNC about his actions…that makes it far more likely that they will be working behind the scenes to sabotage the mail. I suspect they will try to figure out a way to deliver people’s mail on time but mess with the ballots, maybe by separating out election mail and allowing it to be delayed instead of other mail.
In any case, it’s going to take a continual effort to stomp this stuff out…and that will include postal workers, who are already speaking out on what is happening and I suspect will continue to do so going forward. The vast majority of them really are good people and care about making sure people get their mail and there isn’t interference, so if this stuff continues I think we’ll hear more from them. Their union already endorse Biden, which is really a huge statement.
Too fast is right. If an overhaul were the purpose then there would be time of planning. Coming in and immediately taking an ax to things is an indication of intent to destroy, not fixl
Isn’t Friday’s hearing in the Senate with Ron Johnson in charge?
Everything that Stroman has questioned are points that I’m sure Katie Porter has scribbled down, and someone is getting on the research.
None of what NoJoy said will past muster with those who know have to make men spill their guts.
