Five Points On The Lincoln Project’s Dramatic Meltdown | Talking Points Memo

That was always the deal. What’s so hard to figure out about that? You don’t have to marry everybody you sleep with. I have no problem at all owning up to the fact that I quite liked TLP and defended them. I like what they did and I still do. Whatever is going on with them has nothing to do with me. All I care about is beating Republicans. Anyone who can further that is fine with me until they aren’t. That’s politics.

Liking their ads = one thing

Actually giving them money = ugggg

Agreed. I give my money directly to the party or to the campaign. Plus, I felt like much of the point was to siphon money from GOP and indie donors.

I think you’re right about that. I have heard one of the “principals” in this catfight for some years now, as a Republican voice on Boston Public Radio. And I don’t recall her acknowledging this during her brief vacation on the far end of the Reality Beach Club. It was basically “What a putz Trumps is!” and not much engagement with where he came from. Which probably says more about the Old Guard upper echelons of NH GOP. They’re fighting a rearguard action on two fronts: takeover of the party by the loonies; and rising numbers of D voters that have been changing the face of NH politics for some time now.

Ah… I think you’re right about that. I had to work hard to not be the purity police. But some of the ‘bernie bro’s’ still around piss me of with their “Biden promised $2000 checks” bullshit.

Heh! If I’d I been an early bird to the thread,my reaction was going to be: Republicans In Dissary!! And then I thought: Don’t be silly, they’re still Republicans.

This is all pretty unfortunate to see and hear. Anyway, I threw them a hundred bucks last year. I felt like I got my money’s worth and have no regrets.

Now you’re just baiting me.

Obviously what Weaver did was vile and wrong and he should be held accountable for it, but that’s not why Trump’s people went after him and TLG, obviously. It was merely an easy way to attack them, that Weaver and TLG handed them on a platter, not unlike how Clinton gave Repubs an easy way to go after him by being so stupid and reckless (note that I am not comparing what Weaver and Clinton did, merely saying that both were stupid).

Dems had best heed this cautionary tale and not do anything even 1% as stupid and vile as what Weaver did, and any Dem who has shouldn’t be allowed to be front and center because Repubs WILL eventually find out about it and exploit it fully.

That said, I have always been leery of the folks running TLG or likewise anti-Trump Repubs. Many of them were responsible for some of the worst things the GOP did prior to Trump, like VP candidate Palin (Schmidt), the lies that led to the Iraq War and justifying torture (Boot), the theft of the election in 2000 (Ginsberg), the smearing of the Clintons in the 90’s (Will), etc. They are not our friends, just our allies of circumstance. Eventually, they’ll go back to smearing Dems. Some already have.

So, when you boil it down, Republicans are repugnant /full stop/ [period] {punkt} “.”

I’ve always used resources, advantage and opportunity to win within the rules.
TLP offered a modicum of all three at little cost to Dems. No compunction at all having supported their efforts.

On the flip side-- it’s not as if I’m surprised.
‘They are who we thought they were.’ (r/t Dennis Green)

Will add that Steve Schmidt made the switch to becoming a Democrat. Long as he works just as hard for our side? Make amends? Good on him.

I agree with all that. What’s so hard to figure out about that? They are Republicans. We happened to have a common enemy. I welcomed their effort in that. Chrissakes, freaking Stalin helped us defeat Hitler. But in the end, I never lost sight of the fact, at night George Conway went home to Kellyanne.

I was (am) “whatever gets you through the night” – because we had one dark effing night. I’d see them comment and knew we were on different planets. But hey, I’m used to that.

the group’s co-founder was credibly accused of sexually harassing young men, questions have been raised over the group’s spending, and the project’s leadership has degenerated into public recriminations.

Exactly! Sounds like SOP for your average Republican institution.

I believe some honestly wanted trump gone. While I don’t support their conservative policies, I can agree with them on trump.

However, thanks to Citizen’s United, Super PACs also do an excellent job drawing in grifters wanting to make a fast buck. Am I surprised? No. Do we need a better system to stop the looting of non-profits for personal profit? Most definitely.

And I hope that anyone that was preying (or trying to prey) on coworkers or subordinates faces justice.

Good. The Lincoln Project was just another rightwing fundraising scam, except instead of evil liberals and brown people they used Trump to raise money. Because the money they raised was for the purpose of running ads so they can raise money to run ads and the only people who profit are the ones running the ads; which is the money machine at the heart of the Conservative Movement. Just ask the NRA.

Beyond that, Trump was just a symptom, not the disease. Republicans were always the problem because they’re part of a cult that believes government is the problem. The Lincoln Project was like if Dr. Frankenstein raised money to run ads denouncing his monster with promises he could some day build a monster he could control better. No thanks!

There was only one Conway worth a damn… How did he know?

I happen to have donated some money to the Lincoln Project last year. It might have amounted to between 5 to 8% of the entire amount I contributed. For the moment, I don’t happen to regret that. However, if some evidence surfaces that Weaver used any money or resources from the Lincoln Project to advance his harassment, then I will be pretty upset at myself.
Not to mention Weaver.

I will concede that there is always potentially a problem in dealing with Conservatives. They tend to have a LOT of shit in the closet. It’s a risk.

Just another another demonstration of the validity of what I call Adams’s Law:
The only time Republicans tell the truth is when they’re trashing each other.
