Five Points On Greg Abbot’s Border Blockade And National Power Grab | Talking Points Memo

Whose owners will take it on the chin. Much worse would be Democrats grab a hold of power and start taxing them and regulating them.

Well apparently, Abbot was stupid enough that he did not know his own Ag Commissioner was going to make a public stink out of this and predict the Governor was going to cause a spike in food prices in Texas and beyond. His approval ratings suck for a Republican in Texas and this is not the first time he had done something STUPID that has blown up in his face and pissed people off. That stunt of sending the Guard to the border is costing tax payers a lot of money and the Guard is complaining and the wall they built is a joke and everyone knows it. DeSantis is better at this stuff than Abbot is. But even DeSantis can go too far.

I would not be so sure about that. Nobody likes for their business to be damaged for a stunt. They may not like Democrats, but that does not mean they think this is a good idea.

This is a self own on every level. Abbott thought he was going to score some cheap points to keep the xenephobes riled up for the general election because he’s currently running even with Beto.

Instead whats he’s done is take a sledge hammer to the business of one of the biggest employers in the state, HEB, who’s spent decades building the relationships and supply lines to bring Central Mexico’s ag industries into Texas rather than CA. The fuel savings of the TX route means jack shit when your produce is rotting in a truck sitting on the boarder.

This is really the results of a political party that doesn’t have ideas and doesn’t know how to govern beyond their own primary politics.

I hope you’re wrong, but we’ll know for sure by the end of this year.

We have 6 months to make a different ending. It would be nice if the Federal Government started taking action, as many have noted on this board, the wheels grind slowly, but between the gerrymandering, the voter suppression, the endless media bombardments, and the failure to provide real consequences to these fascists, we need 6 months of action, not action 6 months from now.

Perhaps Joe could start making Executive Orders that demonstrate action and get positive attention, and even positive results? Maybe they could start showing up on The Today Show and tell people all the good stuff that’s happened, and how all the bad stuff the Gopper’s are saying is our fault isn’t, with proof? Maybe the DoJ could indict some of these treasonous fascists in Congress and convict them of collusion with the Coup plotters, the slimiest Coup plotters you could find? Maybe the DoJ could start leaking like a sieve with real information of all the horrible things Trump et al have done and continue to do? Maybe they could crack open Deutsche Bank like an Easter Egg and spill the beans on Trumps fidelity to Putin?

I dunno, but us bitching on this board is not going to save the Country. Beto is one guy, who’s running against Desantis, that person needs to start running against Desantis now, not after the primary. Who’s running against Grassley, they need to run against him now, not after the primaries.

The Democratic Party needs to really step it up. Not the fundraising, the action. i don’t know if our leaders can do it or not, they are awfully old and entrenched, or really young, or, really just plain old Democrats who just want to do things to help folks, not fight a crusade.

But we need to fight a crusade, it’s probably too late though, but maybe not. The Democratic Foot Soldiers will do what we can, but we need the big megaphone at the top to drive the conversation our way. You know, Joe needs to come out and start telling the Country that the Republicans are going to deprive the American People, the American Women of their Right to Choose their own destiny, their own lives. The Republicans are going to deprive us of our Right to Vote, the very essence of our Democracy, because of the LIES they have been spewing about the last election, which was fair and fraud free except for the 30 cases of Republicans, and only Republicans cheating on their votes.

We’re counting on the Jan. 6th Committee to do something, but they aren’t going to do anything except expose the rot and corruption and duplicity around the day and the complicity of Trump and his enablers/users/beneficiaries, but they aren’t going to actually do anything, that’s up to the DoJ, and if we have to wait for that we will have waited too long. We need that to happen, yes, but we need more than that, sooner than that.

We need to push back, we need our own caravans and demonstrations, but Democratic style, you know, with substance and value, not just PR bullshit full of hate and ignorance. I don’t know if we have what it takes anymore, I really don’t. I sure hope so.

Why people insist that I don’t know? In this world it is rare when you have full certainty. You don’t know what stocks are going to do in the future, you don’t know for sure if the guy in the black hat that kicked the dog is really bad. You don’t know if the guys in the alley will rob and kill you. You don’t have to be able to read someone’s mind to know that he is being dishonest.

You form opinions and take decisions with imperfect information. You make your judgements based on other peoples words, their actions and your accumulated experience. And from what Garland is saying (nothing), what he is visibly doing (nothing), and the historical reluctance of the DOJ to prosecute right-wingers and republicans, makes me conclude that no big fish is going to be prosecuted.

BTW. How is the prosecution for fraud against NY going? What about the investigation for electoral crimes against Trump going in GA, they have him on tape demanding alteration of results has he been charged? Nope. The DOJ investigations if happening at all will go the same way.

They’ll take it in the chin. Texans are as loyal to their party as they are to their brand of Trucks.

Psaki has already made an issue of this. She did a very good job. Maybe people should pay more attention. BTW, Biden’s numbers are up in a new poll.

No one likes to lose money. Texas is not as red as it once was. Not everyone is okay with chaos and backed up traffic for miles and blocked bridges and empty store shelves and tons of spoiled food.

I have no idea how the prosecution of fraud is going in New York. My only point was that people were complaining that Garland was not doing anything and then it became public that he had called grand juries to investigate Trump people…and apparently no one knew that. All I am saying is we don’t know if he is dragging his feet or if he is waiting for the Jan 6th committee to do its work or if there is something else going on or if none of it will happen. But go ahead and bitch about it. I am sure that will light a fire under him.

Could not agree more on this. I am actually considering stepping away, the direction of the country is really making me upset and before my health suffers I will stick my head in the sand and cut through backlog the 42 books in my physical pile to read and 245 movies on my Netflix queue.

Agreed, but honestly I been holding my breath for some time.

I did that in my time and place. Young people now take their rights for granted. And it seems that to get young people out in the streets you will need to shut down the internet and wait until they exhausted all the lives in their video games and run out of beer.

Yes. And he will shut up once they start calling him RINO.

Did he get out of the 30s or 40s yet? With all that’s been done,it is amazing that his approval numbers aren’t double.

It is all messaging. The GQP as the megaphone.

No, I don’t think he will. Abbot is not a popular Governor down there. I am not saying the state is going to turn into some blue haven, but when traffic on the border is backed up 30 miles with trucks full of everything from auto parts to rotting food, people who have bought that stuff are going to be pissed off. They know he is responsible for this. The media is slowly catching onto something that people in Texas already know. It was a dumb thing for Abbot to do. It created too much chaos.

The federal government needs to stomp this out hard. Can’t have states interfering with international affairs and border issues.

So, the governor of the Tejas Oblast is deliberately sabotaging the US economy and nothing really of consequence happens because inflation is all Biden’s fault.

Got it.
