Finding God in a Cracker Barrel

“In college, I worked at @CrackerBarrel in Tallahassee. I even gave my life to Christ in their parking lot,” Donalds wrote. “Their logo was iconic and their unique restaurants were a fixture of American culture. No one asked for this woke rebrand. It’s time to Make Cracker Barrel Great Again.”

Okay, fine. You found religion in a Cracker Barrel parking lot? That’s fine. I’ve got nothing to say about that, but they’re only changing a logo for Pete’s sake. What does that have to do with your having found Jesus? I’m sorry, but if I squint really hard, I still can’t make that Barrel Man look like the Virgin Mary or Jesus Christ.

So it’s something else, isn’t it? And the point really isn’t where you found Jesus, but that you found Him at all. Maybe act like that, especially with your votes in Congress?

And how or why is this rebrand “woke”? Was the Barrel Man a racist or something? I certainly never knew.

Both the Miccosukee and the environmental groups argued in court that the camp was built without environmental assessments and impact statements that are required for projects involving federal action. Government lawyers countered that the facility is not subject to federal law since it is being built and run by the state.

Foolish argument by the Florida lawyers. Gorsuch would use the case to further eviscerate the EPA with the added bonus of destroying a national park in the name of national security.

In all likelihood there will be a rolling series of disasters over the next decade. Climate disasters with national guard units (chock-full of right-wing chuds) deployed to faraway cities and FEMA a dessicated husk, infectious and communicable diseases spreading rampant with snake oil salesmen as our only line of defense, tech business failures ensured by years of AI hype and no meaningful regulation (or DoJ prosecution), and rampant inflation aided by a collapse in the workforce courtesy of ICE and and sycophants engaging in Erdogan-style economics on the Fed board of governors. The hollowing out of military institutions and withdrawal from international institutions will allow open warfare and genocide to continue unpunished. Queer, non-white, female, and other progressive communities online will continue to be blockaded by “protect the kids” age-verification laws approved by the Supreme Court (and accepted by idiotic centrists who still believe we’re living in a world of good faith).

In other news: Tariff edition.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Friday that Canada is removing retaliatory tariffs on some U.S. products in a bid to reset trade discussions with the White House that have stalled in recent weeks.

He said Ottawa will remove tariffs on U.S. goods that comply with North American free-trade deal rules, mirroring a key carve-out U.S. President Donald Trump made for Canadian goods.

Canada will retain its countertariffs on steel, aluminum and autos, Mr. Carney said, as both countries work “intensively” to find arrangements for these industries – all of which have been hammered by U.S. sectoral duties, known as Section 232 tariffs.

He said Canada is watering down one part of its retaliatory regime so it can focus on getting relief for the hardest-hit sectors, while preparing for the renewal of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which is scheduled for next year. The change takes effect on Sept. 1…

The announcement was made a day after Mr. Carney and Mr. Trump spoke by phone for the first time in months and the first time since Ottawa and Washington failed to reach a trade agreement by Mr. Trump’s Aug. 1 deadline.

Okay, so now the word for satire is “CRINGE”?? What. Evah. You go, Gavin!

Yet another axis of power! The sovereignty of Native American nations! Like Josh Marshall keeps saying, this country has lots of valid governmental means to push back at an overbearing federal government. We need to use 'em.

Cracker Barrel? Haven’t eaten there since they were in the news for denying service to Secret Service agents … who happened to be black. So they’ve got a new, dumbed down logo? So what?

Re: the budget. Democrats would be wise not to expect Republicans to keep any “promises”. Get the cash in hand FIRST. Insist that funds actually be released for this last year before voting on next. Get the payoff before delivering any votes. And give Charles Schumer a nice retirement party first. Please.

The gutting of the top brass in the US military continues.

I mean, I understand Hegseth’s hatred of women in the military is behind Vice Adm. Lacore’s termination. Haven’t quite figured out Rear Adm. Sands - other than he was there when TFG came in.

One of the pundits here quipped that the new logo “removed the Cracker.” An old term for White Southerner, sometimes misused to imply a racist.

I think the guy’s objection like the rest of the MAGA freakout is just that they’re against change of any kind, period. The old logo was a callback to an imagined time when men were men, women stayed in the kitchen, and the Browns and Blacks knew their place. The old-timey CB logo reminded them of that. The new logo is the cleaned up DEI version.

As a graphics guy I think the old logo actually worked better as a distinctive trademark. They should have kept it. But not for that MAGA reason.

Yes!! If I recall, Senator Al Franken’s book talked about how he stepped into politics. The very first rule from all the important Democratic consultants was that he must never, EVER be “funny.”

And yet, Franken succeeded. But those were different times.

Snatch and grab didn’t work this time.

“Can I keep it?!” Trump asked at first. “We’re not giving it back! We’re not giving it back!”

Or, just maybe we can use Rep Donalds’ experience to bolster the opposition to “Alligator Alcatraz” with the Miccosukee Tribe claiming that the state built detention camp defiles the ground where their religious/spiritual originate?

In other news. Ukraine war edition.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada may play a role in security guarantees for Ukraine in the event that an agreement is reached to end its war against Russia.

Speaking at a news conference related to trade Friday, Mr. Carney says that Canada is a core member of an alliance of about 30 countries called the “coalition of the willing” that is supporting Ukraine.

He said Canada’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Jennie Carignan, and other Canadian officials are participating in discussions with allies about what form those guarantees may take.

“It’s a fluid situation. It’s a delicate situation,” he said, adding that discussions among allies include planning related to weapons, training as well as land, air and sea support. He said Canada “might play” a role within that broader group.

Canada has the potential to have an important role. So, we’re very engaged in these sets of issues,” he said, adding that the situation was discussed during his phone conversation this week with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Canada has been involved in peacekeeping through the UN and NATO for decades.

Burke and Hare, the Revival.

the growing online market risks fuelling a new era of “body snatching”, with reports of bones being removed from crypts and graveyards in the UK and abroad.

“You’ve got people who are breaking into mausolea and who are taking remains away to sell them for people who think this is gothic, quaint [or] supernatural,” said Black, the president of St John’s College, Oxford. “If you can make the sale of a bird’s nest illegal, surely to goodness you can make the sale of a human body illegal. Having a necklace made out of somebody’s teeth isn’t acceptable to people.”

In the podcast interview, Scragg appears to acknowledge some older skulls may have been recently excavated, either to make room for new burials or by other legal means. “When you dig up a human skull, what are you going to do with it? You could hand it to a museum. They’ve already got loads of them so they don’t need any more.”

Selling a skull to “people who will look after it, appreciate it, and put it on a shelf and love it”, he adds, could be viewed as “more respectful than burying it six foot under”.

Well, we’ll just have to leave it there.

I bet a lot of people have found Jesus in a Cracker Barrel parking lot when that widow-maker hit them trudging back to their car after that final gravy drenched chicken fried steak.

Probably not a winning argument. The Miccosukee residence in that area only goes back to around 1920 if I remember right. The original Tequesta and Calusa Indians are long gone.

A better argument is the environmental impact, as it’s within the Big Cypress preserve and part of the larger Everglade ecosystem. The worst impact isn’t even the water pollution, it’s the light pollution. The site is lit up like a football stadium all night long.

It used to be a recognized Dark Sky reserve where my friends and I would go galaxy hunting with amateur telescopes. WRT the environmental impact, it’s messing up the nocturnal wildlife in the area. That place is supposed to be dark on moonless nights!

I would suggest the Cracker Barrel logo be changed to a human heart pumping bacon grease.

Donalds seeing Jesus in the parking lot was just a slug of pork fat passing through his carotid artery.
