Feinstein Proposes Future Coronavirus Relief Funding Be Withheld From States Who Won’t Mandate Masks | Talking Points Memo

“If all of us would put on a face covering now for the next four to six weeks, we could drive this epidemic to the ground,” Redfield said.

Rhetorically, DiFi is going in the right direction. That is, as Redfield points out, a simple change in culture, like picking up after your dog or taking a driver’s test, would save so many lives. We need to overcome Kemp’s “bridge too far” framing, and say that a mandate is a normal function of government.

Practically, as the response here shows, different carrots and sticks are indicated.

Why do you hate people living in red states? Even the ones who think there is a need to mandate public heath measures? Even all the black and brown people suffering economic calamity and hugely disproportionate illness and death?

Those are the people you want to punish? How spiteful and, dare I say it, Republican of you.

THE COLLECTIVE PUNISHMENT WILL CONTINUE UNTIL YOUR GOVERNOR DOES WHAT WE WANT, BECAUSE WE WILL NOT JUST DO THAT JOB FOR HIM EVEN THOUGH IT IS ENTIRELY WITHIN OUR POWER TO DO SO.

CITIZENS OF BAD STATES MUST BE MADE TO STARVE AND BE EVICTED AND GET SICK AND DIE BECAUSE OF THE POLICY CHOICES OF THEIR STATE GOVERNMENTS. IT IS THE COMPASSIONATE, PROGRESSIVE THING TO DO.

If I may misquote Lisa Simpson and Max Power (Homer)

Max: There is the right way, the wrong way, and the trumpian way…

Lisa: Isn’t the “trumpian” way just the “wrong way”?

Max: Yes! Only Faster!

I wasn’t always that way, but then Trump came in and they stopped hiding the hatred they feel for people like me.

I live in Georgia and the Governor is suing the city of Atlanta because they mandated a common sense public health measure. Why is he doing it? Just to give the rural white people the satisfaction of sticking it to the gays, blacks and liberals that live in the city, so much for their pious christianity. And this is the latest example of state government actions directed at hurting the cities, in recent years they have made changes in the tax structure that takes away revenue from the urban counties and gives it to the rural and exurb counties and then shamelessly point fingers at the “hellhole” that are minority run cities.

This has nothing to with progressive and/or compassionate. As you are well aware.

There must be consequences/punishment for allowing citizens of a particular State to die needlessly. In order to change that behavior, there must be something in place that shows that State what their actions have created. If you want to be progressive and/or compassionate, you will continue to have people in your State die needlessly. (Actually, you may have people in your State die needlessly regardless of what Federal policies are put in place.)

It actually seems to be the exact same logic I use with my son when he has his air conditioner on and the window wide open.

It’s the same threat of “Shut he window or I’m taking the A/C out of your room”

Also: as I love my child. I won’t actually make him suffer and take away the A/C.

Dems are the parents and Republicans act like children.

Sounds like a great idea to me.

THERE MUST BE CONSEQUENCES AND COLLECTIVE PUNISHMENT! THE BLACK AND BROWN PEOPLE OF BAD STATES SHALL SUFFER FOR THE SINS OF THEIR GOVERNORS. ALL SHALL HAIL DIANNE FEINSTEIN AND DESPAIR.

Expect the people of the States that will be hurt have little or no say in the matter of what the State government does. Are you happy to hurt them as well?

Why do I hate people in red states? Because, they in their infinite wisdom put us in this situation today because of their support for Trump. Actions and elections have consequences, unfortunately fatal.

I look at it more as a fiscally-responsible proposal.

The States with outbreaks are costing us more, subsidizing their stupidity is bad business. Making them get their shit in order will save more money over the long-term than continuing to let them do whatever they want, knowing that the feds will make them whole somehow.

No…, perhaps a re-read of my comment will allow you to note my analogy and the truth at the end that it is basically a point that it is within our control to hold this thing back to get you to understand the lesson but also and empty threat.

Inherently as a parent (or a Democrat) you believe in the welfare of your child (fellow citizens)

Strikes me as a totally legitimate and coninstitutional exercise of the power of the purse and long overdue public health policy. I hope it holds up funding for the entire country while the GOP fashions it into another noose for themselves.

The residents of those States actually DO have say in how their State treats them. They aren’t small children who have no agency at all.

They are already being hurt with their Governors’ actions now.

Taking away the A/C most likely won’t kill your child and if they are keeping the window open, then they most likely have adapted (to some extent) to the ambient temperature.

So, why would taking away something that they aren’t using (properly) harm them?

Sometimes the threat of a little “turn about is fair play” will gain the attention of the morons who have jumped on Donnie’s bandwagon without ever thinking through the consequences of their actions.
I find that a trait that is universal in the right wing. They can NEVER think anything through to inevitable conclusion.

California Senator Dianne Feinstein (D) said Thursday that she planned to introduce an amendment to the next coronavirus economic relief bill that would block stimulus funding to states that refuse to implement mask mandate

Says the Pig Rich Democratic billionaire. FU Diane - and your hedge fund husband. The two of you should be in jail after decades of scamming the American taxpayer. Fucking outrageous.

Thank you Senator. It’s all about choice. Governors don’t have to make the decision that all members of their states must wear masks in part to stay safe (among other actions defined/listed by the appropriate (non-political) authorities), but their stupidity doesn’t mean the US Federal Government has to pay for it after the fact.

I would also like to hear a discussion about these same governors’ liability against charges of criminal negligence and/or manslaughter. The idea that a governor can order people to jump off a cliff and claim that their position in government makes them immune to prosecution needs to be tested in the courts. These “leaders” did not come close to following best practice or use data in a scientific way to make their decisions, nor did they have an honest open discussion with their constituents about the risks and rewards for their blind adherence to President Trump and the Republican Party.

Politics unnecessarily killed tens of thousands of US citizens (think about this carefully), but apparently just not the “right kind of citizen” for the Republican Party and President to feel that they needed to be concerned.
