Trump and Musk are playing a dangerous game trying to wedge out Europe. Economically, Europe is still an 800-pound gorilla and China is the EU’s largest trading partner and the EU’s largest import partner. This really is an economic FAFO situation. Trump and Putin align, only to see China’s relations with Russia go cold again, just as in the brief thaw and refreeze of the late 1950s–early 1960s. Say China wants to annex Far Eastern Russia for itself, and agrees with the EU+ countries on a restabilization of a fully reconstituted Ukraine in exchange. That would put Chinese territory within 2,000 km of Greenland. We are looking at a very shitty game of Risk in real time.
