AI data centers in space is the stupidest tech bro idea yet. Proof that Musk is not an actual engineer.
One of the big problems with AI data centers isn’t just the cooling or electricity requirements, which this does solve, but the need to replace the specialized circuit boards and chips with newer, more advanced versions as they come out. I’ve read of data center chip turnover rates of something like every 2 years for replacement with newer versions. Not possible in space.
Figuring in the time it will take to repackage and customize existing AI chips for a satellite data center, these things could be obsolete by the time they reach the launchpad. Of course Musk would still make money from the SpaceX launch, which I guess is the point.
The scope of the damage, and the enormous amounts of money, time, and energy that will be required to bring us just back to 2024 levels, boggles the mind.
If there’s any silver lining to be found in the current administration its that by taking a sledgehammer to so many government institutions they may have inadvertently revealed that we don’t need to just go back to 2024 levels. If we have to fix all the things that Trump and co. have completely broken there’s actually the opportunity to rebuild better systems.
Data centers in space have a serious problem, though: Cooling. It’s really hard to bleed out excess heat when there’s no convection, only radiation. And that’s before you even factor in things like the planned obsolescence @zenicetus brings up. If you lock those data centers in to their launched chipset, you’ll see a straight up panic from Nvidia. Half of their stock gains have been on promises of chip upgrades being purchased by their own subsidiaries, with no real money changing hands.
Musk’s plan, as usual, is to blow up the bubble he’s living in.
The data on the number of ships bypassing the US blockade is coming from tracking maritime traffic with their transponders. Including those that turn it off on one side, and back on on the other.
Of the 34 ships that have circumvented the blockade, at least 19 are tankers linked to Iran that have exited the Gulf. The other 15 have entered the Gulf from the Arabian Sea, heading towards Iran.
Ah, yes. We’ve seen such a blizzard of “aggressive reporting techniques” being used by legacy media organizations against Trump’s regime…
Although it has been some of the most aggressive sanewashing I’ve ever seen, I do admit.
Next up: U.S. schools stop teaching reading and writing, and infants’ voice boxes are removed at birth – a great convenience for parents and teachers…and the operation will be free of charge!
Or perhaps we could let go of a thing American sevicemembers do all the damned time, that got blown out of proportion by a media company looking for a splashy headline?
When I vote for a candidate, I don’t want them to refrain from participating in “all the bickering in Washington”. I want partisanship! I want mechabickerer!
I’d like to see verification that the settlement amount is 1.25M - the linked article states “The Trump administration has agreed to pay $1.25 million to settle claims from 2016 Trump campaign adviser Carter Page that the FBI and Justice Department illegally entangled him in court-ordered surveillance, according to a court filing and a person familiar with the deal.” The link takes us to DOJ’s opening brief, which states at p. 6 that the claims against the US have settled, rendering that much of Carter’s appeal moot - I don’t see the amount (perhaps I missed it). So we have it on the word of someone close to the matter that 1.25M is the amount.
I’ve got to get one of those stone tablets your on. Then again, stone is natural and part of the environment. Maybe I’ll stick to parchment and ink….oh wait….pigs are charming. Forget about it….
