There are a lot of downsides to giving babies formula that pediatricians have pointed out. And still people want or need a substitute infant nutrition. Along comes a perceived shortage and there is the inevitable run on the grocery stores and Bingo, empty shelves. That is a consumer-based economy Romper Room No No. Enter stage right, Fox Noose, and something, something BIDEN! It happens every time.

Allergies are a significant portion of this demand. A family in my CT church had a child that was so allergic, the only formula that could be used was hundreds of dollars a month and uninsured.
I’m proud to say that that mother collaborated with now Senator Blumenthal (when he was still CT AG) to get these kinds of things supported by medical insurance. She went on to become a nurse. The child in question is now in his 20s.
It isn’t always a matter of convenience. It’s also necessary for low-income women who cannot afford to take time to pump, can’t afford a pump, or work for businesses that don’t support pumping.
There’s a whole lot of reasons out there - failure to thrive when nursing is there, too (that happened with second grandchild).

I remember the more innocent days of my youth, like say three weeks or so ago, when “Elon Musk” was the slightly odd name of a person about whom I knew little more than that. Cars and rockets, wasn’t it? I now see he’s an oddball and it doesn’t much matter, he has reason to back away from this deal and there doesn’t really need to be an excuse that makes any sense. He’s rich, he does what he feels like.

Make-your-own formula is kind-of fraught. There are risks of contamination, problems with sourcing ingredients, etc. Then there is the question of the source of the recipe being used.
If you’re going to go the make-your-own formula route, the right way to make the formula is by feeding mom properly and teaching her how to nurse. That isn’t possible for every mother/infant pair, because…mirabile dictu everyone’s different. Even women who want to nurse may have trouble. My ex- intended to nurse six months. She lasted three. She had problems with cracking skin on her nipples, and our son rejected the salve she was using to try to heal things. So she was trying to wash her nipples/areoles before she nursed (messy process). Then she used a breast pump for a while, and got fed up with that, saying, “I am not a dairy cow!”
