I’d vote for a “Select Committee”, with Speaker Pelosi doing the selections. Sure, include a few Republicans. But only from those who voted to impeach. Too many in the Republican Party actually helped to foment and cheered on the insurrection. These have no right to “investigate” their own actions. Rep. Pelosi has plenty of good, prosecutorial Dems to choose from – just look at the talent she turned out for the Two T**** Impeachments.
In fact, I’ll send a note to my brand new, just-elected by a landslide Congressperson today!
Republicans have their own media structure that will basically regurgitate anything they put out no matter how ridiculous or obviously untrue. Dems have to rely on the MSM to reach their voters and swing voters in gerrymandered districts. That’s why they’ve got to make it overwhelmingly clear that they went to great lengths to put together a bipartisan commission but Republicans refused. When Pelosi sets up a Select Committee with majority Dems, and Republicans start whining that it’s so partisan and unfair, Dems will be able to laugh in their faces. If it were up to me I’d hold a vote on a 1/6 commission every day until the midterms.
Will the Democrats finally understand that bipartisanship is for THEM ONLY. Republicans will NEVER vote for anything proposed by a Democrat, at least not in any numbers, and then they won’t even be consistent.
At this point with the 01/06 Commission being shot down by Republicans it’s time to just keep on keeping on.
Our system was set up to function with checks and balances, and Republicans have routinely refused to allow Dems to be apart when they’re in charge, so now we gave them the opportunity and they refused, so screw 'em. Are you listening and watching Joe Manchin? This country can’t wait for your ideal bipartisan scenario. Dems asked, and Senate Republicans refused.
Good for a few laughs and some press coverage! So, sure, not against that. And, I think the myriad juicy stories running out of the committee, all timed for maximum impact of electoral leverage for Democrats is optimal. Refer any potential crimes to the FBI. Give the journalists a good story and they will run with it.
This is what the Republicans fear and decided to risk. For purposes of a commission, yes, this is sub-optimal, and Republicans will write it off as partisan, and they would have anyway. But, they have the most leverage now to say it was partisan.
The GOP have decided to go for maximum polarization as a way to control fallout from January 6th. In a way it boxes Democrats into that position. Democrats now need to work optimally from the given position. I just don’t see how sweeping this away works for the country much less Democrats. And when Republicans break things, they should pay for them.
Democrats are the adults who truly recognize and care about the purpose and function of our democratic system of governance. We cannot become like Republicans because that would result in the end of our democratic system. If both sides behave in the same manner, we no longer have a nation envisioned by our founders. Our government is broken, yes, but not beyond repair. We cannot give up and give in to Republican tactics just because we can. We have a nation to think about, and not just our hold on power.
That said, I am in favor of the House Select Committee. If Republicans refuse to participate in our form of government, the government’s job still needs to be done. This isn’t partisan. This is simply protecting the future of our nation from all adversaries, foreign and domestic.
I don’t think Dems have any intention of doing so. It’s smart politics to force a vote on this as often as possible. Voting against it looks bad now and will only look worse as more comes to light. It would’ve been such a better strategy for the GOP to embrace it, throw out the criminals and complicit, and then pat themselves on the back for being the party of law and order even when it means policing themselves.
Gee, if only there were a way to appeal to enough Repubs to make this happen, like say paring it down to 10-20% of its current size and concentrating most projects in red states, declaring Satanism, er I mean fundamentalist Xtianity, the national religion, and banning people with skin darker than Pat Boone after he’s left the tanning salon…
That 40% that believes in the Genesis myth literally tracks very closely with Trump’s base, I’m sure, the overwhelming majority of them being dumber than fuck and nuttier than a chestnut tree. Yes, you really do have to be this stupid and crazy to believe in that stuff literally. Myself, I’m a Zeus-worshipper and believe the Titans created us all in the image of the Greek gods.
Yes, we all come from Uranus, Marjorie, so suck on that woohoo!
