The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Tuesday published a proposal for a new rule banning pilots from using personal electronics — specifically a “a personal wireless communications device or laptop computer” — throughout the entirety of a flight, if they are in the pilot’s seat. Digital flight manuals on iPads and tablets for work would still be allowed. The move expands an FAA prohibition against pilots performing distracting activities during takeoff and landing, as USA Today explained. The FAA is soliciting comments on the new rule until March 18.
