It was just before midnight on December 27, 2021, and Jen Remauro had a message for Rep. George Santos (R-NY). The Republican was less than a year away from his victory in a New York congressional election that would trigger a shocking series of scandals and criminal charges. But behind the scenes, there was already plenty of drama.
The writing is on the wall for this guy. If he can’t see that and that fighting it is ridiculous that’s a problem more severe than the other nonsense associated with his name.

When you lie, there’s so, so much to remember.
This is a story about a classic right-wing scam promoted by a classic right-wing scam artist.
The sooner Santos is taken to court the better.
He is a thief. And a liar. Not very good at either.
Usually, this is the point where the thieving liar skips town.
George Santos. Face of the Republican party. And if Democrats don’t make sure be becomes that, they’ll be sorry.

The Santos grift is pretty vulgar but it’s also a good illustration of a reality in US politics generally: it’s a business and the business plan can be stretched, a lot particularly if you’re reckless or stupid, and that naturally attracts vultures.
ETA: what’s striking from that POV is how quickly a political tyro like Santos caught on and used the system at it was. He clearly had all the tools already in place – the cross-linked shell companies, the misdirection, the selection of potentially lucrative contests, etc. – and that’s an additional window into both his ‘business’ (the con) and its relationship to US politics. He’s reckless, not terribly bright, and got caught but you can bet there are a lot like him who play the same game better.

I can’t decide whether Remauro’s plight is best captured by the “Leopard Eating Faces Party” meme or the old adage about lying down with dogs and waking up with fleas.
What I am certain of is that the GOP brought this on themselves, especially with regards to far-right grievance shamans like Forte (Remauro’s candidate) and misuse of campaign funds.
Republicans are in the business of ending government so that predators with money and lawyers can engage in their predation without fear of punishment, and indeed, so they can industrialize it. Every part of Remauro’s victimization by low-rent con-man Santos was made possible by one act or another the GOP has rammed through government over the past couple decades to make it easier for their dark megadonors to purchase elections on behalf of worthless nutjobs like Forte, whose entire public profile is just “posting expletive-filled video rants attacking Democrats and COVID restrictions as the pandemic raged.”
This is just a taste of the world her rich friends have been building for all of us. All the freedom to get suckered, all the freedom to have no remedy, all the freedom to keep everything you manage to steal. So much freedom.
And John Roberts looks on approvingly. It’s just speech.

Santos is a crook, full stop. Every aspect of his life is either a lie, or a crime.
It sure would be nice if regulatory agencies were more aggressive and pants on fire.
I know they’re underfunded by rich people design, but they need to get their asses in gear on however few cases they can handle and get them done.
If Goppers see that there is an actual chance, however small, of going to jail and face other real, painful, consequences, they are likely to think twice. And gives the government time to nail another Gopper crook, etc.
So touching that I may actually shed a tear.
