Why does TPM insist on calling them by the name they give themselves, “Constitutional Sheriff’s”, instead of what they are, “Unconstitutional Sheriffs”?

I mean this from the article is really scary and is more of something you would find in totalitarian states or lawless regions without real governments:

“The group has been associated with the so-called constitutional sheriffs movement, an ideology based on the false belief that sheriffs have unconstrained power within their counties.”

This yo-yo, Sheriff Mark Lamb out of Pinal County, Arizona is so stupid he actually believes the authority of County Mounties trumps (the perfect word here) all aspects and jurisdictions of federal law.

I kind of wish he’d test his theory by declaring “marshall law” in Pinal County, mostly so he could earn plenty of time to further hone his constitutional theories in a federal pen.

I would approve of sheriffs “monitoring” ballot drop boxes IF (it’s a big one) it was to prevent magaRepublicans from stuffing them with open bleach and/or acid containers, dog droppings, and firebombs. Preventing lefty-looking voters from voting? No. Just NO.

What is the supposed “constitutional” basis for this belief that a County Sherriff is the legal “God” of said county and subject to no authority other than, I guess, being up for election???

I don’t recall anything in the US Constitution that delegates this to individual counties. And I don’t understand how it’s only “conservatives” that get to decide their word is final in any interpretation of laws, etc. WTAF?

Yeah. They’re plain old county sheriffs. Big effin’ deal. Nearly all the law enforcement action is going on inside cities and towns, who have police. At best, the sheriff is the Law of the Hinterland.

Hmm, an interstate conspiracy, under color of law, to deprive people of their right to vote. Move along, nothing to see.

I wouldn’t have any issue with them monitoring drop boxes if it were to keep armed, camo-clad MAGA loonies from intimidating other voters.

How come none of these Constitutional Sheriffs showed up on 1/6 to protect our Capitol and their brothers the Capitol Police?

I would fear that these Constitutional Sheriffs would deputize the armed watchers, giving them “legal” status to monitor voters dropping off their ballots.

Better question, how many constitutional sheriffs were in the mob of rioters?

Anyone remembers former Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, who was always blasting Obama about illegal immigration while having a lover that was an illegal immigrant that he was blackmailing? He didn’t even bother resigning…

Since the Capitol Police are basically “Federal” the “Constitutional Sherrifs” should have been arresting them to keep them from preventing activity the “sherriffs” probably approved of.
