Election Denialists Claim They Are Laying the Groundwork for A DOJ Probe of Michigan

Last month, the DOJ left officials across the state of Michigan in a state of bewilderment.  Civil Division chief Harmeet Dhillon demanded the clerk of Wayne County, where Detroit is located, provide records from the 2024 election, saying the DOJ intended to investigate supposed fraud from that election in the state.  The reason for the…

The conspiracies that have popped up around elections are insidious because if you don’t believe them then you have no incentive to even think about how elections are run. But the people who do believe are thinking about them all the time, are attempting to sell their beliefs to others, and the accusations are attention grabbing.

One reason it’s easy for people to start buying into election conspiracies is because they don’t understand what goes into running an election. But once people get a peek behind the curtain and see the protections that are in place they change their tune quickly. States need to have an easy to understand response that can fit into local new segments and be shared on social media about how elections actually work that demonstrates that these conspiracies are utterly unfounded.

Does anyone know, is your name attached to your ballot? Because I thought the whole thing about ballots being a secret was real.

Did any democrats hold any primaries al all??. Every article here talks of repub primaries. Were democrats denied the ability to hold primary elections anywhere?

Stop the Red surveillance of free, democratic processes that are none of Trump’s business.

In Washington, which is exclusively vote-by-mail, you put your ballot into a sleeve with two adjacent sealed sides and the other two adjacent sides open, put that into an envelope, and sign and date the outside of the envelope.

That whole thing goes into either the mail or a drop box.

When it gets to the counters, they first verify that your signature is valid and that you haven’t already voted.

If those are both true, they open the envelope and separate the ballot from the envelope for counting. It sounds like they keep the envelopes separate and saved in case they need to refer to them again.

The ballots go into the pile for counting, so after the opening of the envelopes the ballots are anonymous. I assume the ballots are removed from the sleeves sometime after they are separated from the envelopes, to preserve anonymity.

“It’s not that we hate voters, even if they’re, ick, you know, those people, it’s that we hate the voting process. There are just too many variables, creating the possibility that we could lose.”

And then (in Washington) if you choose to, you are notified by text or email that your ballot has been accepted.

This matches with Michigan’s procedure, though the actual review and counting doesn’t start until election day (or very shortly before). The envelopes are kept as part of the process of verifying whether a person who requested an absentee ballot has returned it in the event they attempt to vote in person.

Unsurprisingly, it’s a very secure process.
