DOJ Sues Tennessee For Banning Gender-Affirming Care For Minors

Maybe if women can become recognized as human beings. IIRC, ERA failed. Currently the status of women seems to be “a bag of protoplasm containing a uterus”. I so wish someone would say that out loud when asked to define what is a woman

Speaking of Soviets, I had a thought (that’s right, singular) the other day: I would love to see the use of shoes in place of gavels in the statehouses of (so far) Tennessee and Montana. After all, they are well on their way to out-Khrushcheving Khrushchev.

Fun Fact: Although there was a shoe sitting on the table, Khrushchev never banged any footwear at the United Nations; twas merely his clenched fist.

Remember also that when Republicans pretend to care about protecting “small business,” they are actually talking about anything they can do to protect big business, big businessmen, and big-pocket donors from reasonable regulation and fair taxation.

And Montana!

Even the rightists who are smart enough to deny it in public, are completely in favor of discrimination on the basis of sex.

I’m thinking that, given the financial and weather-related issues the arch-Disney rival Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Kentucky has had to, well, endure, maybe Tennessee might “float that boat” to a more hospitable clime and location.

I’m thinking Lebanon because that’s where Uncle Pete’s is … or used to be. I don’t know.

While they have not tried to outlaw biological evolution for a while, I wonder what percentage of the population accepts it as a viable explanation for species differentiation. I’m sure it’s still pretty unpopular in the Bible Belt.

Bible as “state book.” I don’t know what its status is in Tennessee, but if they haven’t acted on this, Texas or Florida might beat them to the punch.

i have no problem stating i know very little of what is involved in these procedures…it is a complicated medical issue; i’m guessing most of these so called 'elected’people know even less than i do…let the medical profession do what they do best.

Most gender affirming care starts with talking, to the child’s doctor, finding a therapist/counselor. Hormone blockers may be prescribed, something that can be reversed. The last step of surgery is not performed on minors.
The right wing fundamentalists are presenting what happens as parents are taking their kids into these centers and having surgery right away. In my reading on the subject not every child needs, or wants hormone blocker. And not every child decides on surgery.

But hey it’s OK to give kids their own guns, or access to their parents guns because 2A. It’s shameful to think that not every person with a penis is an Alpha male, or any person with a vagina is most concerned about having and raising children.

From my local NPR station:

And this one I just found out about, the HS is wear I graduated.

Actually most “gender affirming surgery” is done on infants, which is something that I would bet that the relevant politicians know nothing about.

It is estimated… that up to 1.7 percent of the population has an intersex trait and that approximately 0.5 percent of people have clinically identifiable sexual or reproductive variations.

It is those .5% that often have surgery as infants. There are a variety of intersex conditions, some mostly cosmetic and others involving reproductive organ variations. Infant surgery mostly deals with indeterminate external sex organs. “Is this a boy or a girl? Well, let’s chose and make our guess reality.” The problem is that the surgical guess may or may not match how the child identifies. Some will identify as the opposite of what was done, and many will identify as neither male nor female. That makes sense as many intersex people aren’t either XX or XY, but something else.

Many adult intersex people now think that infants shouldn’t be altered, regardless of how odd their genitals looks. They think this is a decision best left to the individual as an adult. Would the politicians ever accept a biological non-binary child? OMG, where would they go to pee?

Past early childhood, the other 1.2% begin to show up, especially around puberty. A “girl” never gets her period because she only has a short vagina, doesn’t have a uterus, but does have internal testes. A “boy” doesn’t develop secondary sex characteristics and things are not as expected inside. Some of the possibilities need surgery to deal with things that are causing problems.

How about gender non-conforming minors (vs. intersex) in search of care? Most gender affirming care for minors involves puberty blockers, hormones, and counseling, not surgery. It seems that the most common gender affirming surgery is breast removal done between 15 and 18. After that testes and uterine removals may be done at 17 or 18.

The World Professional Association for Transgender Health said hormones could be started at age 14, two years earlier than the group’s previous advice, and some surgeries done at age 15 or 17, a year or so earlier than previous guidance.

So what are the TN legislators making such a big deal about?

On average, VUMC [Vanderbilt U] has provided five gender affirming surgeries to minors every year since its transgender clinic opened in 2018. All were over the age of 16 and had parental consent, and none received genital procedures. [Oct. 2022]

As a gay guy I’m alarmed at just what the never-defined “Gender affirming care for minors” entails? The current social contagion of the Gender Identity Movement seems intent on “transing” non-heteronormative youth- who almost 100% of the time grow up to be gay and lesbian adults. It is alarming to be labeled some right-winger because I’m concerned at what clearly appears to be “gay conversion therapy” from the left as aided by the Trans Movement.

I’m horrified by what I’ve seen on the popular “I Am Jazz”, tv show and frankly much of the “trans youth” movement looks like white liberal mothers afflicted by Munchausen-by-Proxy syndrome transing their would-be gay kids.

Last summer I witnessed multiple young shirtless lesbians over Pride weekend (It used to be called Gay Pride, but that’ll get your teeth knocked out these days) with chest scarring from having their breasts removed, with crowds cheering them. I’m sorry, that is not healthcare.

I observe the biggest audience for “transing” youths is straight white people of a liberal bent perhaps many of the responders here, but as a gay guy I feel it is valuable to represent other points of view that are cowering out here. As a former non-heteronormative acting child, I worry about gay kids out there in today’s trans environment.

Well, in reality, the Rethugs are all ignorant monkeys, so what would any thinking person expect.
