DOJ Moves to Dismiss Trump January 6 Case

I can honestly say I don’t think the President-Elect survives the four years. That’s just actuarial tables talking there.

I’m the first one to say only the good die young and this guy is so foul the devil doesn’t want him because he’s too much competition. One out of three means two of those three don’t make it. That’s good enough odds for me.

Yes ! And there are 77 MILLION OF THEM ! We are fucking doomed when that many morons can actually vote.

I think, for the sake of humanity, we should give this place up and ask Canada to take the sane half of us into THEIR democracy. Ours sucks, royally.

Every election of my entire lifetime has had its outcome dictated by vibes.

1972: Nixon wins reelection because the economy is good and McGovern is a weak and shitty surrender monkey who’s aligned with all those damn dirty hippies.

1976: Carter wins because he’s a fresh face after all that awful Watergate/Nixon scandal stuff.

1980: Reagan wins because of the Iranian hostage crisis and Carter presiding over horrendous inflation.

1984: Reagan wins re-election because the economy really had turned for the good and he had a strong public image against Carter’s weak-ass veep.

1988: Bush gets credit for Reagan’s continued strong economy and Dukakis is a doofus riding around in a tank.

1992: Clinton wins on the back of genuine charisma and Bush taking the blame for a recession.

1996: Clinton wins reelection on the back of genuine charisma and Republicans showing themselves to be a bunch of mean and crazy bastards. Plus effective triangulation, truth be told.

2000: Dubya wins on Clinton fatigue, mainstream media adulation, and Gore being a constant scold.

2004: Dubya wins reelection because he kicked Saddam’s ass after 9/11, while Kerry’s an effete and out-of-touch rich dude who does weird rich dude stuff.

2008: Obama wins election handily on the back of long-standing opposition to the Iraq War, incredible charisma, and Dubya’s global financial crisis, beating a war-mongering weirdo with no idea what to do about any of it.

2012: Obama wins reelection because the economy really had turned around, and because Mittens is a weirdo venture capitalist with open disdain for half the country.

2016: A rich guy celebrity scrapes out an electoral college win against one of the least trusted politicians of the last three decades, who then goes out and repeatedly proves just how untrustworthy she is before getting shivved by the director of the FBI.

2020: Biden wins because he’s a normal and relatable candidate in the middle of trump’s economic meltdown and pandemic disaster.

2024: trump retakes office because Biden’s too damn old and too damn proud in a time where everyone is paying substantially higher prices for everything and a lot of them are willing to ignore the 2020 calendar year as being the virus’s fault and also prices were a lot lower back then.

Somebody needs to work out a viable model of vibes-based presidential politics.

Coming back to this. Can’t Trump just file suit to delay publication until after the inauguration?

President Donald J. Trump’s Original Complaint and Application for Prior Restraint.

No.

4 years to act before election says you’re wrong.

Well then you’d better get working on your French lessons, there will be a test…

French is a prettier language than English. My favorite composer is Debussy. French cuisine is the best in the world. Life in old Montreal could be pretty sweet. Of course life in St. Barts would be even nicer.

Not in a cave, but caring for an elderly mother and a brother with a brain tumor. Perhaps you could enlighten me about the particular hell you’re referring to that was outside of my experience at the time. TIA for reducing my ignorance a bit.

Bush v. Gore.

The Supreme Court has been awful since its inception, with a brief and limited respite in the from roughly 1954-1974.

Interesting how the time interval you cite was also a time when income and wealth inequality were low. Many remember the FDR-WWII period that lasted to 1980 with Reagan’s election as America’s Golden Age (at least for White Americans, Blacks not so much).

Yes, the Court was temporarily remade into a progressive institution by the New Deal and subsequently did a fair amount in supporting the Civil Rights movement. But it was recaptured for the oligarchs by the Nixon and Reagan/Bush/Bush appointees, and now put into the service of fascism for at least a generation by trump.

That is, unless the next Dem trifecta appropriates a shitload of money to pay them to fuck off into early retirement.

Thus my confusion. You had typed “Dec. 2020.” I had always thought Bush v. Gore was from 2000.
