The federal government is applying a McCarthy-era law to strip a Somalia-born Minneapolis man of his citizenship over actions that took place after he became a citizen. It’s a fundamental break with how the government has attempted to denaturalize people. Bound by extensive Supreme Court precedent, the DOJ has long pursued these cases against people…
They are looking for a poster-person to run on for elections and extend their genocidal policy, and found what is probably the least defensible person they could find to charge aggressively.
Given their policy druthers, of course it would never stop there if they can manage it.
Really going after one guy from Somalia, what about Eric Prince and Blackwater, his merry band of mercenaries?
For the Trump administration this case is close to what the law intended to handle. It could be argued he didn’t tell the truth on his application. I don’t like it but I bet there are a lot of people generally who accept what the administration is doing in this case.
Next up: “You joined Antifa, so we’re taking your citizenship”…
“naturalized within the last five years”
Check Melania.
Ain’t nothing natural about that freak.
I’m not so sure DoJ’s attempt is so outrageous. It seems that the way the law is written, naturalized citizens are on a five-year probationary period. Engaging in behavior during that five years that would have prevented the grant of citizenship, like joining a militant group, could suggest that their allegiance to the U.S. is suspect. If all a person did was speak out, then applying the law would be outrageous. But I’m not so sure I want foreign militants as U.S. citizens, assuming the evidence supports DoJ’s claim.
Were they able to realize their wet dream of stripping the citizenship of every person in America who is truly anti-fascist they would end up ruling a population approximately the size of Kansas.
If I had my druthers I would let them live out their fantasy of a Christo-fascist utopia … in North Dakota. However, they wouldn’t be allowed trade relations with non-fascist states/nations. (Sure hope they enjoy an endless diet of beans and pone.)
As a naturalized citizen I have been through this process. The question they ask is - have you or your family every been a member of the communist party…..maybe now they add terrorist group. But in this person’s case it looked like he answered honestly.
I actually don’t have much a problem with this. Al-Shabaab was designated a terrorist organization in 2008. Presumably his trip was sometime before then.
His traveling to Somalia with the intent to join them makes him a security risk. If a naturalized citizen of say, Canadian descent, flew to Jordan with the intent to support ISIS or Al Qaeda, I don’t think anyone would blink an eye about denaturalization.
Disgusting given that he was a star witness for our gov’t. I wish I had faith that the US supremes applying the law because this will go to the extreme supremes.
Geez, talk about an unsympathetic defendant.
Nevertheless, there’s a strong argument the law violates equal protection.
Thiel, Musk, Dhillon …..
I’m sorry, there is no “probationary period“ post-naturalization. A person obtains citizenship which can only be revoked on proof of fraud in obtaining it. More BS from this “administration.” 86 47
Trumps illegal immigrant wife has committed more crimes against America than all the Somali immigrants rolled into one.
Uh, it wasn’t a “terrorist organization” when he went there, and he was opposed to ETHIOPIA, not the US. And he didn’t like it and came home. This was all 18 years ago. What has he done in that 18 years to show he is a security risk?
All legal rights and constitutional protections of citizenship in this country are exactly the same for all citizens. By definition, they aren’t different or merely conditional for any U.S. citizen, whether native-born or naturalized.
Congress passed a law in the 1950s saying that for 5 years the government could go to a court to have the citizenship stripped if they could prove fraud in the application. The law has been used in the past. It is hard to prove. The person in this case is going to get full due process. This isn’t the Trump administration arbitrarily stripping citizenship.
People on both sides think so badly of the other that they tend to exaggerate normal cases. Trump and his band of freaks are bad enough, but not every thing is beyond the pale.
It certainly looks that way, but as others pointed out, it will be misused – he farted in church, bam, back to asscrack Arabia.
