Discussion: Zinke At Wildfire Site:'A Lot Of Things I'd Rather Spend This Federal Money On'

“We need to get out of the litigation business and into the mitigation business,”

Oh, it rhymes so it obviously is the solution. These simpletons must think everyone one has the same mindless IQ of the average Trumpanzee.

Better toe the line, Zinke. That’s how corrupt cabinet secretaries survive in this WH.

“For instance, to carry out the President’s agenda we need a lot more of these.”

Agree, I’d want to look at the one lot seen in many pictures that appears to have been never touched. It even appears as if the grass was not touched, maybe even needs mowing.

In addition to what you point out, the fires were never forest fires. They were brush fires and one of them even followed the path of a previous fire about six years ago where most of the vegetation was less than six years old.

Thinning trees (aka clear cutting) leads to lots of brush growing that you don’t find in shady forests. In addition, it leaves behind the branches that were cut off the tree trunks that were taken away for lumber. That just adds to the fuel available for the next fire.

“I, and my fellow republicans enjoy looking out at a magnificent view, building vacation homes near the wilderness so we can play rancher and hunt.
We will chop down the trees near the middle class towns, not the ones that might bring down our property values - this is practical forestry.”

he’s referring to the environmental impact studies and lawsuits against easements, etc. What they want you to forget is that giant fires happen in California in areas that have no saleable timber ALL THE TIME -
Malibu is not the heart of lumberjack jobs

yay - the destruction of habitat and ecological balance will be made better by the destruction of habitat and ecological balance over there!

Said in another way:

“So sorry you lost everything and your folks are dead, but if you had just done what we said, God would have spared you and them.”

I hope he gets bone cancer and suffers for years.

Corporations that will rape and pillage the landscape to fill their already filled pockets to overflowing and leave behind as much if not more damage than this fire did.

“There’s a lot of things I’d rather spend this federal money on rather than repairing damage of things that have been destroyed,”

There must something in the WH water…

Such a bizarre statement. Do WH people say these stupid things at floods, mudslides, and hurricane devastation sites?

Yes they do.( But they save the best rakes for wildfires.)
“Is this your boat? Or . . . did it become your boat?” Trump asked the man.
“At least you got a nice boat out of the deal,” he said, with a smile.

Supposed to be 100 foot defensivable perimeters… which end at the property line, so 5-10 foot perimeters. I understand the economy of close-knit housing, but I will never understand such dense-pack housing in rural areas. California, I guess.

Man the chutzpa of these two knuckleheads, first the structure fires are a completely separate issue, as many others readers pointed out. Also the winds made the fire jump, so I am not sure how much thinning out the forest is going to help, but of course land management is important. And these non-believers (who clearly are fox guarding the hen house) have the gall to say that the land management regulation are to blame for slow response and taking care of their jobs as appointed civil servants? Seriously. Someone just needs to ask Zinke if he has always been an asshole or if it just started when he became a appointee?

Guess what, fires are natural in nature. Put houses in that natural area, and boom, things can happen. But guess what, if the BLM and Interior dept own it, there are no private houses in said land and therefore people can’t get hurt by natural/unnatural fires. Solution: make BLM and Interior own all undeveloped land outside of 50 miles from nearest city (25,000), or just kick all the people out and the good ol’ USA can take care of herself just fine.

So how big a vegetation-free firebreak do you need when the fire is capable of leaping an entire damn highway?

More mush from the wimp.
