Discussion: WSJ Says Institutionalized Racism 'No Longer Exists' In Charleston Shooting Editorial

Isn’t the very fact of that so many people of power are so willfully ignoring and trying to dispel the fact that this murder was racially motivated the absolute definition of institutional racism? The killer has said so himself.

He is probably a very troubled person emotionally and/or mentally, but he could still be racist, they are not mutually exclusive.

Institutionalized racism’s denial of its own existence is proof thereof.

Period.

My first thought on reading that headline was… “wow, the WSJ is using sarcasm to make a big point.” But, no. After the gutting of voting rights for minorities, after Ferguson and after the cop killing in SC, and after so much cop violence in other instances, and in light of the mood of the country (i.e., black lives matter)… how can a national news organization claim, with any sense of decency, that “institutionalized racism” no longer exists? Stunning lack of … insight? or intelligence?

“What causes young men such as Dylann Roof to erupt in homicidal rage, whatever their motivation, is a problem that defies explanation beyond the reality that evil still stalks humanity,” the editorial stated. “It is no small solace that in committing such an act today, he stands alone.”

  1. I disagree. FOX Entertainment, Rush Limbaugh, Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump, Matt Drudge, Mark Levin and a whole host of others in right-wing radio and talk shows are constantly beating the drums about Mexicans, black section-8 and food stamp welfare moochers, Sharia law being thrust upon us, gays always “shoving” something down your throats … on and on. That very dark talk falls upon the ears of many mentally-vulnerable people. Add that to the NRA going to all kinds of extremes to make sure our nation is awash in guns and weapons of all kinds.

  2. No, this dude does not stand alone. Re-read #1 above. You folks have Dylann’s back – and you know it. The only point at which he “stands alone” is once he’s done the deed – you are oh so happy it’s done – but for your public performance, you distance yourselves but only from the deed not from your support of yours and others’ actions to push people like Dylann to the point of doing your dirty work.

From what I’ve heard today, not even the governor has the authority to lower that awful flag. I think I heard that it takes 2/3 of both houses of the SC legislature.

The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board - one of the last refuges for well dressed crackers.

““What causes young men such as Dylann Roof to erupt in homicidal rage,
whatever their motivation, is a problem that defies explanation beyond
the reality that evil still stalks humanity,” the editorial stated. “It is no small solace that in committing such an act today, he stands alone.””

Utter bullshit.
This kid was taught to be a racist by SOMEBODY who is a racist. The KKK still exists. Roads in S. Carolina are named for Civil War generals who fought for INSTITUTIONAL RACISM (slavery). African-Americans have no choice about using those roads and that is a forced racism to me.
If the WSJ thinks racism institutional or not has gone missing they are very much in denial.

And who would stop her if she marched out there and just cut the damned thing down? Who would arrest her?

Someone needs to show some fucking courage.

I believe that we have reached the point of boycotts. The WSJ knows that it is lying. However, they have a circulation and that circulation supports the WSJ’s statements here.

There may be people out there who actually NEED to read the WSJ. Those who do not and/or wish to react in an appropriate manner to Rupert Murdoch’s acquisition should simply not patronize it.

I agree with you…That little shit Hilton who attacked airline personnel, and disabled a smoke detector-a Federal Offense- got community Service, just like he bragged he would; the Texas brat who killed a few folks while DUI’ing, got off for 'affluenza, and on and on. The White fucks who murdered kids in Newtown, Aurora and now Blacks in a Church are ‘ill’, ‘disturbed’ what the fuck ever. Now just imagine how the WSJ would be reacting if a Black man or a Muslim had gone into a White Church and had done the same thing. Would the coverage have been so muted? Mentally Ill? Disturbed? Troubled? An Isolated Act? I DON’T FUCKING THINK SO! And everyone with an IQ more than an amoeba knows it.

I was just sayin’ she had a ‘rule’ to cower behind.

It should go w/o saying since the WSJ is part of Rupert Murdoch’s Dark Side along with Fox News.

Institutionalized racism still exists, all right, it has just gotten sneakier. Cf. Lee Atwater.

The whole “ill” and “disturbed” thing upsets me a lot. It is just so easy to blame those instead of look at the real reasons behind them.

After Sandy Hook and Aurora, I spent a lot of time doing research because of having to try and counter so many of the myths and mistakes going around. A few shooters do have mental health issues and a few have developmental issues, but of the entire run of spree killers out there, those make up only a handful of cases.

But you are right- if the shooter had been Black- he’s a criminal thug. Hispanic/Latino? Drug Dealer. Muslim? Terrorist. Police officer? Hero.

“Institutionalized racism” might have been beaten back at one point in the past 50 years, but it all went out the door when the Roberts Supreme Court began whittling away at and eliminating entire provisions in the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts since 2000.

But the “personal racism” on the part of the individual justices who voted to dull the teeth of the original bills, as well as affirmative action, cannot be denied by anyone now. Clarence Thomas isn’t safe to worship in his own church any longer. I hope he realizes he needs to watch his back the rest of his life as long as Dixie has him in its crosshairs.

This nation is not colorblind no matter what John Roberts thinks or infers he thinks.

I would have attributed that quote to Karl Rove, but he’s demonstrated he’s way too stupid since Romney lost to pull it off any longer.

Lack of courage. Everyone in this country is scurrying around trying to land a job or hold onto it. Outsourcing does that to a once proud nation now reduced to third world status by multinational, unpatriotic conservative billionaires.

That may have been the case fifty years ago, but in Virginia, at least, that is no longer true, not in the classroom. Check out the standards of learning for history that are currently being used in Virginia. There is, believe me, a serious effort being made to get the history right.

I dont know about "institutionalized " racism still existing (most likely it does), but I sure as HELL know that SYSTEMIC racism still exists today in America. That is simply undeniable to anyone who isnt willfully blind or intentionally lying to themselves.

Whatever happened to Southern voices like Faulkner, Anderson, O’Connor and Twain? Did they die off or just die of shame?
