Discussion: With Eye On O'Rourke, Cruz Scrambles To Defang Family Separation Policy For Good

But when it comes to the immigration crisis on the border, both have introduced bills that do almost the same thing: They want to prohibit U.S. authorities from separating children from parents who are charged with crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.

Another BS AP article, sigh.

Cruz wants to be elected Senator and will do and say anything to do that including crafting a bill which is evil (IIRC similar to House bills which have died).

Beto actually wants to stop #FamilySeparation and re-unit families w/o being evil.

Big difference.

But sounds of wailing toddlers separated from their parents and images of children held alone behind metal caging proved too much for Cruz and many in his party.

To be clear AP, only 10 to 15% of the party disagrees with the policy of separation. It’s just the optics that are bad. That is what “proved too much.” It’s hard to deny you’re a fascist when you’re caught on tap doing the most cruelly fascist of things. Hacktacular AP. Hacktacular,

FFS, this reads like Republican talking points:

‘But sounds of wailing toddlers separated from their parents and images of children held alone behind metal caging proved too much for Cruz and many in his party.’ Read: Republicans truly care about children.

Democrats like O’Rourke, meanwhile, have flocked to Texas to tour detention facilities, decry what they see and attempt to keep the border in the news, figuring it will hurt the GOP in November.’ Read: Democrats are using the issue as a tactical ploy.

This type of sloppy, hacky journalism has to stop.

OK OK we all know AP is the frozen pizza of journalism. The point here is that this separation stuff that they’re stumbling around trying to get disentangled from is absolute kryptonite. Look at Trump’s poll numbers: They’ve fallen dramatically in the last week. It’s a flagrant, undeniable, obvious evil that’s not a big challenge to understand. Anyone who ever loved another person or animal understand the sadistic cruelty of it. It’s a nightmare for the GOP. That’s the point.

“O’Rourke, white and of Irish descent,”

Ted Cruz, white and of Cuban-Canadian descent.

Agreed. Repbublicans will never lose people who excuse the cruelty due to tribal loyalty, but they are at serious risk of losing people who feel more responsibility to the children.

My concern with sloppy journalism like this is that the media can be complicit in putting ‘absolute cryptonite’ in the wrong hands (e.g. Cruz is now the moral savior of the Republican Party and moderates should support him in that role) or, more worryingly, keeps qualifying things to the point that the cryptonite no longer becomes absolute.

Hey, I might go down to the border and separate a few families myself if it would get Cruz out of politics.

I guess I’ve been sneering at AP for too many decades to find it much use any longer criticizing them. They’ll run out of money some day and go poof. In the meantime, holy hell, a GOP Senate candidate is scrambling to undo and put a stake in a toxic policy his own idiot president put in place. That’s the more salient news to me. Yep, Trump has his base, and he could cook and eat one of those kids and they’d go along with it. But the regular folks, your Fox-watching aunt and uncle, the ones who fell in line, they’re not down with this. They’re decent enough that way, they’re not monsters. They’re pretty shocked, actually. They know what family means. They didn’t vote to orphan people.

I will repeat what I have posted before.

Defeating Cruz is not just good for Texas, it is good for us all.

Beto is still five points down, but it ain’t over until the Irishman sings tenor.

Beto needs everyone’s support.

(Disclaimer - I don’t know Beto but I have had the occasion with Cruz. He is at least consistent in being an ass.)

Which is why Trump was amazed that anyone would care about it.

The beer commercial style opening of this article indicate the writer had previous marketing experience before he was accepted onto the crack AP team of reporters.

Beto is currently getting my monthly contribution. The amount may well increase depending on bullshit Rafael spews.

Anyone who can shamelessly write “en espanol” has no business commenting on anyone else’s minimal skills.

A mere oversight.

You are quite correct.

Let me amend the passage which you excerpted from the AP article, ever so slightly, in order to correct it:

But the outrage voiced by the many Americans who were sickened by sounds of wailing toddlers separated from their parents and images of children held alone behind metal caging proved too much for Cruz and many in his party.

Done and done.

Many of the infants will never see their family again. Trump did that. It is all on him.
