Discussion for article #238717
One thing William Shatner and Carny Cruz have in common…They’re both Canadian.
I believe you just DID get political, Mr. Shatner.
It was a stupid question by NYT magazine for sure, Shatner is correct that Star Trek was apolitical, however, Gene Roddenbury, its creator, was an unabashed humanist, and that is hardly a belief system one can ascribe to the GOP.
There will be no Republicans in the 24th century, there may not be any in the next decade.
Yeah, and Darth Vader is a Democrat! Democrat bad, Republican good! Me lizard brain! Me go potty now!
Star Trek may not have been partisan, but it was most certainly political.
Cruz also expected us to believe that the Cat in the Hat was a Republican. That thing on Trump’s head has more brains than the Cuban Canadian. Rand Paul and his chainsaw have more in common with Leatherface than Kirk has to do with Cruz.
Dunno. I think I’m with Sen. Cruz on this one. Who would have been more likely to attack Iraq out of pique, Kirk or Mr. Spock? Kirk.
Who would be more likely to forsake his admirable libertarian impulses because the thought of gay sex makes him “feel” icky (or aroused), Kirk or Mr. Spock? Kirk.
Who would cut the budget of the IRS enforcement division to score political points, even though the net effect is a bigger federal deficit, Kirk or Mr. Spock? Kirk.
Who would put the entire ship and crew in great danger because he wants to shag the beautiful alien from planet Zorg, Kirk or Mr. Spock? Well,… Bill Clinton.
Nichelle Nichol’s role as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura (an African American playing the role of a military officer) was hugely progressive for that era.
And Mr. Chechov, a russian, in the main crew was also considered progressive (and political)
Cruz knows Star Trek was a TV show, right? Kirk’s macho bravado would have got him killed early on in the 1st season had it been reality, and Picard as well for that matter too.
Did Cruz assume Kirk was a Republican because of the bad toupee?
Cruz seems to have confused Shatner’s role as Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek with his role as Denny Crane in Boston Legal. Of course, Shatner’s character in Boston Legal was a caricature or parody of a Republican, but, you know, Poe’s Law …
If Kirk had been a Republican, his overriding concern would have been for his own promotion and aggrandizement rather than the welfare of his crew. Besides, if he had been a Republican, he wouldn’t have been in the military in the first place.
Many have no idea how huge that was.
Finally an explanation for Cruz, teleporter mishap.
Nailed it. To paraphrase Mr. Shatner . Anyone who listens to anything Ted Cruz says Is silly
Set phasers on derp.
And if they had only known about Sulu (George Takei ) Blacks! Gays! OMG
